Tuesday. Decreasing wind, increasing sunshine, and decent dirt up high.

DSC_1296-Edit
It’s mostly clear outside my window this morning, with a few marine clouds to the west. The satellite picture shows a solid cloud line down the Gorge somewhere, and the gradients at 6am were .08 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc). Our offshore high is the same as yesterday, but our desert upper level low (ULL) has weakened, giving us less cross-Cascade gradient. Expect westerlies at 16-19 this morning from Swell to Mosier, picking up to 21-24 late morning or early afternoon in that same stretch of river with Steven’s Locks joining midday and Rowena/Lyle/Doug’s joining late. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind forecast, continued…

That ULL moves further east tomorrow, further depressing the pressure gradients. We’ll start with westerlies at 15-18, or possibly 13-16, from Swell to Mosier. In the afternoon, the wind will pick up to 18-22 from Steven’s Locks to Mosier, possibly filling in at beaches near Rowena late in the day.

High pressure starts building over the Northwest on Thursday, leaving us with westerlies at 10-13, and Friday looks like a light and variable start with 10-13 possible late in the day. The Columbia River at The Dalles is at 201kcfs (average for this date is 368kcfs) and the river temp is 60 degrees.

Random Morning Thoughts

I went by the fish stand at Windance yesterday (It’s called ‘Wild Columbia Salmon’, if you didn’t know) and ended up hanging out and talking to Doug, the owner, for a while. We were talking about being nice to people and about paying it forward.

Most fish sellers chop off the wings and the bellies and the collars and skeletons and chuck them. Doug smokes them and gives them away to his customers. So, when I walked up last night, he pulled some smoked salmon belly from the smoker. Yum. Like, really yummy. If your timing is right when you go to buy fish, you may end up with some smoked bellies too.

So here’s my point: Doug’s taking a waste product and turning it into something amazingly delicious and giving it away. You and I may not have smoked bellies to give away, but we can give away other things: kindness, compassion, bridge toll to the person behind us, a suspended coffee, flowers (even wildflowers), or a ride to a hitchhiker.

Be kind. Pay it forward. Make the world a better place, because the more “better” there is in the world, the happier we’ll all be, and the more “better” we’ll create. It’s a vicious circle of the best kind. And buy Doug’s fish, because he’s one of those people who makes the world a better place.

Gorge Weather Forecast

We have a mostly sunny start to the day today, and there’s just a slight chance of convection bringing more clouds this afternoon. So, expect sunshine. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the low 70’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows.

Tomorrow looks mostly clear to start with a slightly higher chance of afternoon convective clouds than today. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks much like Wednesday, but a touch warmer: Temps will be in the mid 50’s in the morning and mid 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

A couple of friends and I went up to the 44 Road yesterday and rode 8 Mile and part of Fifteenmile. There are sections of tacky soil up there, but there’s also quite a bit of dry dirt and a few dusty corners. We’re already in “pray for rain” season, and it’s not even June yet. I saw a Strava track of Gunsight yesterday. That doesn’t mean it’s clear of snow or downed trees, but it does mean you can get through there. I’m trying to track down more information, so don’t go jumping on that ride quite yet. As for road biking, the wind will decrease over the next few days until there’s nearly none on Friday, so that’s the best day this week for a long ride.
