Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow, Friday, starts with light and variable wind, nice weather for fishing. Yesterday’s counts at Bonneville were 3588 Chinook and 408 Steelhead. Anyway, back to the wind… Expect light and variable conditions in the morning with westerlies at 15-18 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles late in the afternoon.

Saturday starts off with west wind at 5-10 or so. As a frontal system moves east in the afternoon, hopefully before dark so you can get on the water, the wind will pick up. Expect gusty 10-13 in the western Gorge, where it will be raining. East of The Dalles, you’ll find gusty, up-and-down 25-29 all the way out to Threemile. At this point, Sunday does not look windy.

Random Morning Thoughts

I am, as you may have gathered, totally fascinated by meditation. I believe it’s the key to reducing emotional suffering and to making nearly every moment of life vibrant and fear-free.

People who spend a lot of time sitting and watching their mental processes (watching, NOT thinking about) eventually come to the realization that they don’t control the start of those processes. Thoughts and emotions just arise. When observed objectively, they go away pretty quickly.

We don’t control the start of those processes, but can influence the direction they take. When we see a thought or an emotion and identify with it rather than just watching it, we feed it. Making this concrete, if we feel sadness, we might say, “I’m sad,” and “I’m sad because my lover left me,” and “I’m always sad,” followed by “everyone leaves me…” and so on.

So, we take a little sadness, and we create more anguish around it by creating more thoughts and emotions. This can create an ugly spiral of depression, anxiety and loneliness. The trick is to just watch the original emotion and let it wash over us without creating thoughts and stories around it. And then it will go away in its own time.

This may sound like madness, but I promise you that it is entirely possibly, given time, to stop the spirals of anxiety, depression, and worry in your world. You will still have crappy minutes, hours, and days, but you will be able to breathe through them. This is a promise from me to you as someone who’s been there and come out the other side.

Sit and watch your thoughts and emotions for a few minutes a day, and your entire world will change for the better.** Meditation. Pretty simple. Pretty awesome. Have an awesome day.

**disclaimer: as you watch what’s going on, things might get worse before they get better – what’s really going on in your head can be scary! – consult your mental health provider, not your weather forecaster, before attempting a meditation

Gorge Weather Forecast

I just looked out my window, and it’s high overcast out there, so I think today will start off cloudy. Yep. That right there is why they pay me the big bucks! Anyway, we may see some cloud dissipation later this afternoon, but for the morning, expect clouds. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 70’s this afternoon with high humidity and light east wind.

Tomorrow may start out partly cloudy, but will be cloudy in the afternoon with a chance of sprinkles late. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon with light west wind, high humidity, and a 17% chance of rainbows.

Saturday starts off cloudy with temps in the upper 50’s and finishes of rainy with temps in the low 70’s. Light wind early, moderate wind late, high humidity, and a 56% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m not sure how much rain we received yesterday as I was in Portland all day, but I’m doubting it was enough to impact the trails. Maybe on Saturday. In the meantime, the trails are still there, and with winter rapidly approaching, your mountain biking days are numbered. Get out and ride despite the dust! That said, I’m issuing a tentative TackAlert for Sunday afternoon. You’ll find nice road biking weather today with light east wind, and nice road biking weather tomorrow morning with light wind. Saturday looks rainy after noon, so ride early.
