Sunday. Tackalert?

DSC_3995
We’re starting off Sunday with just a bit of wind and just a bit of gradient, with the exception of exceptional Arlington, which had an early morning reading in the low 20’s. I’d not recommend running after that, or after the low-teen reading at Swell; the wind today will fade to glassy by midday and switch to light east wind at less than 10mph this afternoon. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off with west wind at 5-10 or less from Stevenson to Mosier. As a weak cold front moves towards the PNW in the afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up. You can expect a short, gusty mid-afternoon period of 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s, possibly at the Maryhill section of river too. Models don’t seem to think the wind will fill in at Arlington with the same power – you can expect 12-15 at the far east beaches tomorrow afternoon.

See below for details.

High pressure builds over the PNW on Tuesday, for a light and glassy day. Wednesday looks like moderate east wind, not enough to get me to stop on my way to school, but possibly enough for y’all to get on the river. The rest of the week, from this early vantage point, isn’t looking like much: high pressure will sit over the PNW giving us sunshine and unseasonably warm weather.

Out on the coast, you’ll find this (north/central/south). Today: LT/LT/10-15, W swell 10′ @ 13 seconds. Tomorrow: LTS/LTV/15-20, W 8′ @ 12 and rising. Tuesday: 5-10/10-15/15-20+, W 9′ @ 12.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. No wind at Jones the next three days. Nothing at Sauvie’s today and tomorrow, but there’s a chance of 10-13+ on Tuesday.

Random Morning Thoughts

In one of my classes at school, we’re reading about the Bowen Model of family therapy. Writing letters to family members is one of the signature parts of this model. When I read this, I thought, “That’s a terrible idea. Potentially dangerous. Likely to end relationships, not heal them.”

And then something struck me: That’s my family, not most people’s. A sign of healthy communication and healthy relationships is the ability to have conversations about tough topics. When family systems, relationships, and friendships are working well, people bring up their differences. Heck, they bring them up before they need to write a letter about it! That’s not saying that difficult conversations are easy; it’s saying they’re possible and a sign of healthy interaction.

If we feel we can’t talk to someone about a relational difficulty, something’s wrong. That wrongness can exist either in the relationship or in our perception of the world at large (which we’ve generalized from previous relational experiences). There are various ways to change our perceptions; I believe the most effective path to change is through different experiences, in this case, having difficult conversations that end up okay. Start with low risk, low fear-factor conversations, build a base of positive experiences, watch your comfort level grow, and then tackle the bigger conversations.

It’s a slow process, and like all change, it takes time. Earning the ability to be at ease while having difficult conversations takes practice, it takes self-compassion, and it takes patience. But change in your ability to have these conversations is possible. You can’t change how other people will react, but you can change you and your reactions. And that’s pretty awesome stuff. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a beautiful morning with just a few clouds in the sky. Sadly, we won’t see any rainbows today, but there were rainbows yesterday, so it’s all good! Temps today will be in the mid 50’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon with light wind. Expect a chance of the Nothing tomorrow morning with temps in the upper 40’s early. We’ll see high clouds in the afternoon as a weak, but probably dry, cold front clips Oregon. Temps will max out in the low 70’s tomorrow and the wind will be moderate. Tuesday looks sunny and dry with temps in the low 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon.

Road and Mountain Biking

Hospital Hill and the Whoopdee Trail are now open, because SDS and Kreps say they are. So get out there and ride. We had .26” of rain yesterday. That should be enough to make the trails, if not 100% tacky, at least partially tacky. More rain likely fell in the mountains, so those trails maybe be a little fresher too. In road biking news, today looks epic. Light wind all day, sunshine, temps in the upper 60’s this afternoon. Next chance for epic road biking is Tuesday.
