Sunday. It’s May. It’s … summer?

DSC_0329_HDR
There’s not much happening in the way of wind let this morning, and that’s due to a couple of things. First, nothing’s keeping the east gradient confined to the river – it’s much windier up on Mt. Hood than it is at the surface. Second, the thing that’s going to create today’s easterly gradient still hasn’t moved from east to west, leaving us waiting patiently (or not so) for it to get its butt in gear. You can expect the east wind to pick up to 15-20 at Rooster and Stevenson by late morning, with E 7-11 through the rest of the Gorge. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Monday morning starts off with E 25-30 at Rooster and E 10-15 at Stevenson. The easterlies will slowly fade during the day, ending up at E 5-10 by 5pm. Sometime in the evening, we’ll see the gradient turn westerly as a cold front moves into the PNW, and that’ll start us off with west wind on Tuesday morning. You can expect W 17-20 from Viento to Doug’s first thing Tuesday morning, but that wind will die off to W 7-10 midday. After 2pm, the westerlies will return at 16-19 from Stevenson to Doug’s. As of right now, Wednesday looks like W 22-25 and Thursday looks like W 25-29, but that’s a very long ways out to be making a call. River water temp is 53 degrees.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There’s still no snow in the Mt. Hood forecast, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t snow on the ground. There’s plenty! Today, Sunday, is the Ram’s Head Randonee uphill-downhill race at Mt. Hood Meadows, and the Mountain Shop will be there with demos of gear that’ll work. Over at T-Line, they’re planning on Palmer, and that’s all the news I have right now. Oh, Meadows is closed Monday through Friday this week.

It’ll be sunny up on the volcano today. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 8000′ early and 11,000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be E 30 in the morning, slowly dropping to SE 10 by late afternoon. Monday looks warm and sunny with the FAF between 10,000′ and 11,000′. There is a slight chance of convective clouds and/or thunderstorms in the afternoon. Wind will be SE 15-20. Tuesday starts off sunny, or maybe with some high clouds. It’s looking like some sprinkles will kick in around 2pm, with .1-.2” sprinkles between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. Wind on Tuesday will be S 10-15. Wednesday looks showery with the snow level at 9000′-10,000′ and light S wind.

Random Morning Thoughts

I read a really disturbing thing in the NYT yesterday. Apparently wealth is so concentrated in the hands a of a few individuals that their choice of residency has a significant impact on the tax budget of the state where they reside. In response, states are starting to woo the wealthiest individuals, offering them incentives to stay put. We do this with companies, of course, offering corporations like Nike or Boeing large tax breaks to stay in town and keep jobs local. Now we’re doing this with individuals. Wow. I don’t really have any deeper thoughts on this right now – I’m too tired from not enough sleep for too many nights in a row, but it’s certainly fodder for an interesting conversation, eh? Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

Summer continues for the first day of May, with sunshine and warm weather. Expect temps in the mid 40’s early and the upper 70’s this afternoon. Light east wind. No rainbows. Monday looks hot and sunny with a chance of convective clouds and maybe a little thunder late in the day. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind, no rainbows. Tuesday will likely have high clouds as a weak cold front approaches and then moves through. We might see a sprinkle or two, or maybe we won’t. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Looks like we’ll see a better chance of rainbows on Wednesday and Thursday.

Road and Mountain Biking

I only had an hour yesterday, but I sacrificed it in service of inspecting the trails for you. Post Canyon is dry but fast and fun. Be careful on Float On! – the ball bearings are starting up. Just make sure you stay high on the berms, where the dirt is packed down. See – berms are good because the ball bearings just roll down them! In road biking news, this morning looks delightful, but you can expect interfering easterlies to pop up this afternoon. Tomorrow afternoon looks light, warm and perfect… maybe even too warm! Midday Tuesday looks like your best bet for zero wind.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include the Bear Springs Trap mountain bike race at McCubbin’s Gulch, a trail work party at Post Canyon’s Family Man at 9am, free yoga at Samadhi at 9, ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 10, pickleball at May Street Elementary at 1, pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3, and YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 4.

Looking ahead to next saturday, it’s the Angela Coe Rainy Day Run in Cascade Locks, Track Town’s Youth League in Hood River, and the Dirty Harlots mountain bike race team car wash.

Have an awesome day today!
