Monday. It’s a little spooky how nice it is out there…

Golly goodness gracious. Although it’s barely May, we’ve been seeing a series of summer-like high pressure setups off the coast leading to a fair bit of Gorge wind. This week sees us head right back into another summer-like setup, after a break today for some easterlies. Expect east wind at 25-30 at Rooster this morning with 20-25 or so at Stevenson. The wind will fade to light and variable by 5pm, turning to light westerlies this evening. If you are in the river, watch out for Chinook – 10,155 made it past Bonneville yesterday. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

We’ll see a weak weather system move through early tomorrow, and high pressure builds in behind it on the coast. The exact location of the steadiest wind will depend on the depth of low cloud intrusion, of course. That said, let’s go with this for now: Dawn Patrol at 21-24 from Mosier to Doug’s, picking up to gusty 24-27 in the afternoon from Hood River to Maryhill with less wind at Stevenson and the far east beaches.

Wednesday looks a little tricky, as we remain under the influence of a low pressure trough, giving us a chance for showers. In addition, precip models predict a solid swath of rain moving through the eastern Gorge late in the day, and that, if it happens, will wreak havoc on the wind. That said, it looks like we’ll see W 21-24 right off the bat from Hood River to Mosier, with 26-30 by early afternoon from Hood River to Maryhill. If the rain doesn’t materialize, and the wind wins out, we’ll see Arlington jump to 30+ late in the afternoon. Basically, we need to wait a day and see what tomorrow’s models say about Wednesday to narrow down our options. Thursday looks like W 26-30.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Once again, we’re back to Timberline or nothing today, as Meadows shuts down Monday through Friday this week. It’s going to be all spring skiing, all the time for the next few days, with a chance of thunder and rain. Expect sunshine this morning with convective clouds and a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. The freezing level will be 10,000′ all day. Wind will be SE 15. Tuesday looks cloudy for much of the day (if not right off the bat). There will be some light rain overnight. Wind will be S 20. Wednesday looks showery all day long with the snow level at 10,000′. Wind will be S 20.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been thinking a lot about humility lately. By humility, I don’t mean submissiveness or spinelessness. I mean the willingness to accept the fact that the way we perceive ourselves and others and the world around us may be in need of improvement.

This comes up a lot in a personal growth path. As we seek to become better human beings, we look inside ourselves for things that don’t feel authentic, genuine, organic (whatever the heck those terms mean) or in our best interest. And we can find a lot of stuff that way. However, the best way to find things to improve upon is to ask others, and that’s f**king hard, pardon my French. You see, we can’t see our own blind spots – only those around us can see them.

And asking for advice like that takes a lot of humility, just as it takes a lot of humility to call a therapist and ask for help (especially in our society, where cultural expectations suggest we MUST handle everything ourselves). See, the problem is that we become attached to a concept of “I’m an okay human being” or something along those lines. And when someone tells us “yo, you need to work on this”, it can upset our entire self-concept. That can feel devastating!

It’s important to remember that we’re all just struggling along, and that we all have things to work on. If we want to become more awesome, we need to leave room in our hearts for our own imperfections. Because we all have stuff we can work on, even if we are awesome just as we are. So remember, even though you’re awesome, you can be humble too. And that’ll make you even more awesome. Have an awesome day!

Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks partly cloudy and showery. Road and Mountain Biking

Looks like a pretty awesome morning out there for a road bike ride, and that’s what I’m going to do when I finish up all my work. Ok, not all my work. Just what needs to be done before I ride my bike! Expect decreasing east wind as the day goes on, leaving you with an epic (if a touch hot at 80+ degrees) zero wind afternoon. Tomorrow through Thursday look rather breezy on the road.

On the trails, we have some good news: Dog River is open, logged (apparently there were 70 trees down) and clear of snow. I’ve not heard if anyone has cleared the trees from Surveyor’s, but if Dog River is snow-free, that’s a good sign for Surveyor’s and possibly also Lewis River. Remember, Siouxon is open too!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include free Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm, community yoga at 6pm at yoga Samadhi, pickup basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, and Zumba at 6:30 at the Parkdale Community Center.

Coming up later this week, Thursday and Friday are the peak of the Eta Aquarids meteor shower, and Saturday is the Cascade Chainbreaker mountain bike race down in Bend.

Have an awesome day today!
