Wind Forecast

I looked out my window this morning, and all I could see were ripple on the Columbia. But then I looked at the iWindow, and it was reporting 7am gradients of .07 (pdx-dls), .02 (dls-psc) and .41 (eph-dls). Given those gradients, the wind must be hiding somewhere, whether it’s in the ripples on the water, the space between the pine needles, or between the mattresses of people sleeping in White Sprinter Vans. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Expect a quick build to 10-13 by mid-morning from Cascade Locks (hi One-Design racers) to Hood River. The wind will slowly climb during the day until it reaches 17-21 from Cascade Locks all the way out to Rufus.

Tomorrow starts off with 12-15 from Hood River to Mosier. Cascade Locks joins in mid-morning, at which point we’ll see the Cascade Locks to Mosier stretch pick up to 17-21. It won’t be long before the Rowena stretch joins in. As an upper low (or trough, depending on your model preference) approaches the PNW late in the day, we’ll see the westerlies pick up. Expect 21-24 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles after 5pm, with more wind once the sun goes down. This late afternoon wind could be influenced and moderated by thunderheads, should they build.

It’s the semi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

Your Monday morning Dawn Patrol will be influenced by gustiness and unreliability related to the low pressure system. That said, expect 24-28 from Swell to Doug’s early with 28-32 in the afternoon all through the entire Gorge (unless we see thunderstorms). Tuesday looks to max out at 26-30. The rest of the week looks windy too.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: 20-25/15-20/LT, SW swell 2′ @ 13 seconds. Tomorrow: 15-20/5-10/LT, SW 2 @ 13. Monday: 5-10/10-15/LT, SW 2 @ 13.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 21-24. Jones tomorrow, 22-25. Jones Monday, 10-13. Sauvie’s today, 15-18. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 13-16. Sauvie’s Monday, light.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was giving a friend from Maui a tour of Post Canyon yesterday. The dirt, by the way, despite having zero moisture content, is still there and still fun. Anyway, we were descending Lower GP when my upper lip and a hornet crossed paths. I’ll let you imagine the stream of profanity…

People tend to crash their bikes when they get stung while riding. Knowing this, I’ve spent some time visualizing getting stung while riding a bike. I visualized myself calmly removing one hand from the bars and knocking the stinging creature from my body. It worked. I can’t say I was calm yesterday, but I didn’t crash; I yanked the wasp off my face (it wasn’t letting go) and kept riding.

Visualization doesn’t just work for stinging creatures and cycling. It works for staying calm under pressure, it works for learning new moves in your favorite sport, and it works for, well, lots of things. Just keep your visualizations positive – don’t visualize crashing your bike. Visualize yourself setting a PR!

Unfortunately, visualization doesn’t work for diminishing swelling. In my case, only prednisone works for that. In the meantime, I’m enjoying my new supermodel poofy-pouty-lips look, and I’m looking forward to drug-induced housecleaning mania. Have an awesome day, and go visualize something awesome!

Gorge Weather Forecast

Pardon the f-bombs, but it’s going to be fucking hot again today. Expect low 60’s this morning and low triple digits this afternoon with moderate wind. Coming up tomorrow, you can expect weather that drops from “fucking hot” to just-plain-hot and likely muggy too. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the mid 90’s in the afternoon with a chance of clouds and thunderstorms. Moderate wind, 3% chance of rainbows. Expect a lovely sunrise on Monday morning with temps in the mid 60’s early and the upper 80’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. 1% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Yep, it’s another lovely morning for a bike ride. Get it before the pavement and clearcuts are a bazillion degrees! I took a friend for a ride in Post Canyon yesterday, and I thought it was quite fun. You may also think the same thing.
