Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s a snowy morning on Mt. Hood with lots of fresh snow on the ground. We’ll see continued snowfall today. The snow level will be 3000′ all day, dropping to 2000′ after the sky clears around midnight. Approximately .5” water value (WV) will fall by 5pm, for 5-6” of new snow. Another .2” WV falls tonight, for a couple more inches of new snow. Wind today will be W 25 all day and all night.

Tuesday looks cloudy with light snow flurries, becoming warmer with light rain after 5pm. The snow level on Tuesday will be 2000′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 9000′ after midnight. We’ll see .1-.2” WV during the day, for an inch or two of new snow. Models suggest we’ll see .2-.4” WV overnight, which will likely fall as mixed precip and then rain. Wind on Tuesday will be W or NW 20-25 all day, turning to WSW 30 after midnight.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Models are in disagreement about the amount of rain we’ll receive during the day on Wednesday. The NAM and ECMWF both suggest heavy rain. The GFS thinks the heaviest rain will stay to the north of us. So, let’s start with what we do know: the snow level on Wednesday will be 9000′ for much of the day, 8000′ in the afternoon, 6000′ around 2am, and 5000′ by daybreak Thursday. We’ll see up to 1” of rain between 5am and 5pm. Another .2-.5” WV falls overnight, with the tail end of that being an inch or two of wet snow. Wind on Wednesday will be WSW 30-35 all day and all night.

Thursday currently looks snowy in the morning and clear in the evening. The snow level will be 5000′ early, dropping to 3000′ in the afternoon and 2000′ after midnight. We’ll see .3-.5” WV during the day, for 3-5” of new snow. After that, we’ll have clear sky and starlight. Wind on Thursday will be W 30 in the morning, WNW 30 midday, and NW 35 in the evening, turning northerly overnight. As of right now, Friday and Saturday look clear and sunny.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Monday morning. You can expect light and variable wind this morning. By this afternoon, we’ll have west wind at 10-13 from Steven’s Locks to Doug’s Beach. East of The Dalles, the wind will pick up to gusty W 24-27 this afternoon. Tuesday looks like W 7-10 in the morning. In the afternoon, the western Gorge will remain relatively not-windy, but the eastern Gorge will pick up to 22-25 after 2pm. Wednesday starts out with light east wind and switches to light west wind.

Thursday starts out with light westerlies. As a low pressure system moves inland and a high pressure system builds off the coast, the wind will pick up. Expect gusty 21-24 from Steven’s Locks to Hood River Thursday afternoon. We’ll see W 27-31 from Mosier to Arlington on Thursday afternoon. River temp is currently 43 degrees. River flow is 426kcfs at The Dalles, which is almost certainly too much flow at the Maryhill section of the river, although you’re welcome to stop by and check it out!

Random Morning Thoughts

In the counseling world, one of the things people try is to get others to change their thoughts. I believe this is a massive undertaking. I believe that this approach, if taken without intervening steps, is likely to result in an awful lot of frustration and self-criticism for the person making the attempt.

So, let’s try this instead: rather than beating yourself up for having painful thoughts, for obsessing on something, for thinking of death, or for suffering in some way due to the words in your head, be kind to yourself. Before you try to change your thoughts, be nice to them.

Each time you notice something self-critical or painful going through your head, name it and say hello. For example, say this: “Hello worrying about everything thoughts,” or “Hello being mean to myself thoughts,” or “Hello critical thoughts of others.” That’s it. Just say hi, and do it nicely, like you mean it.

Saying hi to your thoughts will create some distance between you and the emotions associated with those thoughts. And saying hi nicely will allow you to be kinder to yourself for having those thoughts. That’s it. Try it if you want. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

If you’d like to go mountain biking, you can head to Syncline with half of Portland. Sandy Ridge is also open. We have a report that the Gorge 400 is open – I will go jogging and check it out for you on Wednesday. Do not ride Post, because you will damage it. In other news, Dry Creek, Osborn, and Carroll are all in amazing shape for dirt roads, and I highly recommend you do some road biking soon.

Upcoming Events

It’s Monday, and there’s meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. There’s a walking happiness group that leaves One Community Health in The Dalles at 5pm, there’s Kickball at Daubenspeck Park at 6, free yoga at Samadhi at 6, Pickup Basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, free Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell and at the Parkdale Community Center, and YogaFaith (Christ-centered yoga) at Pure Yoga in The Dalles.
