Friday. Bye, September.

dsc_0339_hdr
When I woke up this morning (probably later than you due to a late night of classes on Thursday), the trees were waving around and the river was rippling. In some sense, this was due to .08 (pdx-dls) and .03 (dls-psc) gradients. As an upper level moves toward the coast today, stuff will happen to increase the wind through the Gorge. I say “stuff” because I’m too exhausted to go into the details. Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Anyway, expect morning wind in the single digits most places. You’ll find exceptions to this at Viento, Swell and Mosier, where you’ll find 18-22 for the early morning session. By this afternoon, we’ll have gusty 22-25 from Viento to Arlington. Stevenson is a big maybe, so let’s call it 18-22 this afternoon.

Saturday sees that upper level low festering off the coast. It’ll make a move in the afternoon, cruising into southern Oregon or northern California where all the pot farmers will be scrambling to harvest before a downpour drenches the dank. With the low off the coast in the morning, we’ll have just a ripple of a westerly breeze. In the afternoon, we might get lucky with west 10-13 east of The Dalles, but we might also just see light wind all day.

As that low moves inland on Sunday, the whole region will sit under uninspiring gradients. We’ll have light and variable wind in the morning with a chance of 10-13 or nothing at all in the afternoon. Monday sees the low clear the Cascades, setting us up for an afternoon of 20-23 east of Hood River.

Random Morning Thoughts

This month I’m learning a strengths-based form of therapy called Recreation of the Self (giggles from the Buddhist peanut gallery). Among other things, this theory posits that our mind states are merely disparate neural networks. One set of linked neurons might leave you feeling hopelessly depressed, mired in misery, unable and unwilling to escape. Another pathway might give you a sense of peace, hopefulness, and connection with everyone and everything around you.

Recreation of the Self makes the claim that we can learn to shift from one neural network to another. From hopelessness to hopefulness. From depression to joy. You may be feeling skeptical at this claim. I certainly was, although the theory makes perfect sense to me: after all, when one feels awful, there’s no sense of the goodness in the world. When one feels joyful, it’s difficult to feel the possibility of overwhelming pain.

I’ve changed my mind. It is possible to jump from one mental state to another. It starts, for me anyway, with conceptualizing the brain in such a way that this is possible. Our emotional state is merely the firing of a specific neural network. There are, I suspect, many ways to shift from one network to another.

You could try imagining a past situation that brought the emotion you’d like to feel. You can imagine a beloved living being that elicits a sense of connection. You can do something silly and childlike to bring up old, unwounded networks of playfulness and curiosity. You could even eat a delicious something and concentrate on the happy feelings that arise. There are a bazillion ways to shift from an unpleasant place to a pleasant place. Finding your way will take faith, time and effort. It will likely be the best effort you expend in your life. May you be at peace. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly clear out there this morning, and you’d better get out there an enjoy it. An upper level low off the coast this weekend will up the cloud count. Expect temps in the low 50’s today and mid 60’s in the afternoon with increasing clouds and increasing wind. No rainbows. Saturday looks mo’ cloudy, with temps in the upper 40’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Chance of sprinkles all day, light wind, 23% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks a lot like Saturday: temps in the low 40’s early and mid 60’s in the afternoon. Chance of sprinkles all day. Light wind. 44% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I have nothing new to report today, other than the fact that there are chanterelles in Skamania County. This belongs in the biking section because I often hunt chanterelles on a mountain bike. Biketoberfest, benefiting HRATS, is NEXT Saturday in Post Canyon. Free demos, music and other such stuff. In road biking news, Saturday and Sunday morning should have light wind along with temps in the 40’s. That’s not ideal road biking weather, but it sure beats strong wind with temps in the 40’s!

Upcoming Events

As always on Friday, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Donut run. Meet at the coffee shop at 7am, go for a 4 mile run, and get free coffee and a donut. Also as always on Friday, I was in bed when the run started. Hopefully you made it. There’s a trail run at 8am tomorrow in Post Canyon. I’m sure I’ll sleep through that one too. Then on Sunday, at a much more civilized time, there’s 44 Minutes of Post, a cyclocross race in the Family Man area. 12 noon, happy 44th birthday, Jill!

Have an awesome day today!
