Saturday. First day of October!

sunset
The river is looking glassy in some places this morning and a wee bit wiggly in other places, and not much will change during the day. An upper level low off the coast (two, actually) will squash the cross-Cascade gradient today (Saturday). The resulting weather will be better-suited to shopping, road biking, and fruit gleaning. Expect light and variable wind early, a possible (but not guaranteed) midday bump to 10-13, followed by light and variable evening wind. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Sunday starts off with a pesky upper level low off the coast. If you’re a chanterelle mychorrizae in a coastal forest, you’ll be happy about the rain associated with this low. If you’re a windsport person, you’ll have to wait until the afternoon as the low moves inland along the OR/CA border. Expect light and variable wind early. As the low moves inland midday, the wind will pick up to gusty 13-16 from Steven’s Locks to Mosier. East of Mosier, the wind should rise to gusty 20-23 after noon, lasting through the evening.

Monday sees weak high pressure in the morning and an approaching front in the afternoon. We’ll start off the day with 15-18 pretty much everywhere with the exception of Steven’s Locks. We’ll have periods of 20-23, perhaps even 23-26, from late morning to early afternoon. After 2pm, the wind will back off into the teens or less. Tuesday currently looks light and variable early with 23-26 possible in the afternoon. I want to let you know now that I have a huge week next week, and I’ll be taking Thursday through Sunday (and perhaps Wednesday too) off from forecasting.

Random Morning Thoughts

Today is the first day of October. Many of you may associate this date with various things: fall, mountain biking season, pear season, mushroom season, dirt biking season, etc. One Community Health has decided this is Gorge Happiness Month.

They’ve created a month of activities to help you increase your level of contentment. If we do this as individuals, the positive consequences will reverberate through our community. Yay for happiness!

If you’d like to be happier, if you’d like to make our community and our world a happier place, please sign up and participate. That applies to people in the Gorge and people who live elsewhere. Share with your friends, and let’s get the entire Gorge-loving community feeling happier, more content, and more peaceful. Wouldn’t that be awesome? Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

We’re currently in a pattern that leaves us with beautiful sunrises and sunsets. How can you complain about that? We’re about to move into a pattern that leaves us with rainbows. Rainbows mean rain, and that means you should probably bring your marijuana plants inside to protect them. Just a bit of gardening advice for you Oregonians.

In actual weather news, expect a partly to mostly cloudy day today with a chance of scattered sprinkles during the day and light rain after 5pm. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 72% chance of rainbows. Sunday brings light drizzle in the morning followed by sprinkles in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind early. Moderate later. 99% chance of rainbows. Monday looks partly to mostly cloudy with rain in the evening. Temps will be int eh upper 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. 47% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Although it’s possible we’ll see some sprinkles, drizzle or showers this weekend, it seems unlikely that we’ll get enough rain to turn the trails from dust to tack. You’ll have to head to the Gifford Pinchot if you’re looking for perfect dirt. Other than that, today looks great for road biking with light wind all day. Tomorrow morning will be okay if the rain doesn’t push into the central Gorge. Monday looks windier. In dirt biking news, Post Canyon has reopened for moto use. However, there’s quite a bit of logging going on in upper Post, and that will affect many trails including the 160 (Baby Head Alley, etc) and 170 (Dirt Surfer). Complete list: 130, 140, 150, 152, 160, 170, and 180.

Upcoming Events

Because it’s the weekend and I slept in, I’m too late to tell you about the 8am trail run in Post Canyon this morning. It’s not too late to tell you about the Two-Day Garden Party at Pacific Hermitage. Help the monks split and stack wood. There’s a potluck both Saturday and Sunday at 10:30, a work party from 1 to 3, and tea from 3 to 5 or so. In other Hermitage-related news, there’s a free half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadhi from 1-5 on the 8th.

Tomorrow’s events include the regularly scheduled free yoga classes: 9am at Samadhi, 4pm YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles and 6pm restorative yoga at Pure Yoga Hood River. There’s pickup touch rugby at 3 at the Mosier School and pickup Ultimate at 5 at Westside Elementary. There’s a all-comers Cross race at Family Man at noon to celebrate Jill’s 44th birthday. There’s also a Rosh Hashanah brunch tomorrow. If that happens to be your faith, you can contact me for details. Fantastic – we’ve covered Buddhism, Christianity and Judaism in the events this weekend. So much for secularism!

Have an awesome day today!
