Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! We’re kicking off Wednesday with lingering elevated instability, clouds, and yep, west wind. Mother Nature keeps the westerlies coming all the way into the deep future, despite the chance of thunderstorms, despite a 100 degree day on Saturday, and despite the lack of marine clouds on the west side. Starting Sunday (almost certainly) and continuing through Monday or Tuesday, we’ll have a bout of stronger, perhaps even nuking, westerlies. Ensembles keep the westerlies – and notably cooler weather – all the way through next week.

Today, Wednesday, opens up with pressures of 29.93/29.89/29.90 for gradients of 0.04 and 0.01. Above us: clouds formed by elevated instability (which doesn’t affect the wind like surface-based instability). Westerlies were over-performing at dawn: 20mph from Viento to Hood River and 15mph near Stevenson. Instability clears the area, allows the sun to shine forth, and sets us up for a nice thermal gradient. Expect 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier early with 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s by early afternoon. We should see gusty 24-27 from Lyle to Rufus in the afternoon with 26-29 from Avery to Arlington this evening. Remember that readings of 26-29 out east are more like 20-23 readings at Swell. With offshore low pressure persisting today, the wind is likely to be particularly gusty. It’s worth noting that thermals could under-perform today if the desert clouds linger longer than expected. River flow over the last 24 hours was 120-213kcfs (lowest in the morning), river temp is almost 70F, and high temp forecast is 91F and muggy.
With that offshore low pressure lingering, Thursday’s wind will be primarily thermally driven. Models hint at a little marine layer. That’ll help. Dawn Patrol, prior to 8am, has potential for 22-25 from Viento to Swell, maybe to Mosier. That wind carries on into the morning: 22-25 from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 in the Rowena stretch and 20-23 from Avery to Boardman. In the afternoon, the Stevenson-Swell stretch drops to 17-20, and Lyle-Arlington rises to 25-28. High temp: 90F.

Peak wind Friday looks to be dawn patrol: 23-26 or a touch more from Viento to Swell with 18-22 east to Arlington. The wind holds in the low-mid 20s from Stevenson to Mosier through late morning and then drops: 16-19 at Swell and 19-22 at Stevenson, Viento, Hood River, and Mosier. At this point, the Rowena stretch will see 13-16. Afternoon wind picks up to 19-22 from Lyle to Avery. High temp: 90F.

Extended: Saturday looks hotter (100 degrees or so) and less windy: 13-16 focused from Stevenson to Hood river. Models are mostly in on a 15-20 degree high temp drop for Sunday. If this forecast holds, we’ll see a monster day: 30-35+mph. Ditto on Monday. Models knock the wind down a little on Tuesday but keep it strong. We’re getting way out into the future here, but generally speaking, the ensembles keep the west breeze going. Have fun out there!

There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. There’s a free community paddle at Wylde Wind and Water every Saturday at 10am (gear provided, all ages). They also have a free community wingfoil orientation every Thursday at 5:30pm at the Hook (all ages, gear provided). Northwave and GoFoil sponsor wingfoil races on Tuesday evenings.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. Columbia Gorge Tri Club meets at Mayer State Park at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
Ape Canyon and Plains of Abraham are open per USFS website. Patchy snow and downed trees were there as of last report, 6/24. 44 Road trails are all open and clear, including upper 450 and Fifteenmile. As of 6/30, Gunsight is open. Boulder Lakes and other more remote trails are not bucked out yet. Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
