Keep in mind that the Gorge wind forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! Westerlies return today, strongest in the morning. Get on it. Tuesday looks best for no-wind activities (swimming, fishing, road biking, sculling…) Westerlies return late on Wednesday, but it’s unclear if they’ll be early enough or strong enough to get you out there. As of this morning, Thursday’s setup looks solid – offshore high pressure, a heat low in the desert… just The Cooldown You Were Looking For. Models aren’t in agreement on Friday – there’s a decent chance of incoming rain. It’s likely we’ll see gusty westerlies of some sort. Beyond that, uncertainty is quite high, but there’s a decent chance of enough wind on Saturday.
Monday morning started with pressures of 30.14/30.05/30.02 and offshore pressure at 1024mb. West side: low clouds. That’s a decent setup and will give us wind. Models do suggest high pressure will quickly build today and knock the wind down. Early wind was 16-19mph most places between Viento and Threemile. Rufus was the highlight with 24-27mph to start the day. If you want that stronger wind, get it right now! Westerlies fade as the morning progresses.
By midday, the eastern Gorge will be down to 17-20mph or less. Between Stevenson and Avery, the wind rises to 19-22mph and holds into late afternoon. After 2pm, areas east of Avery fade to 13-16mph or less. River flow over the last 24 hours was 76-108kcfs, river temp is 69.3F, and high temp forecast is 72F in Hood River and 75F in the desert.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
Tuesday starts dead calm. Easterlies rise to 10mph mid-morning near Cascade Locks for a couple hours. By afternoon, the wind will be light/variable. High temp: 78 in Hood River.
Wednesday starts with easterlies at 15mph near Rooster Rock, Stevenson, Home Valley, and Viento. You’ll have a couple hours to catch that wind. By midday, conditions turn light and variable. After 2pm, westerlies are likely to return. They’ll slowly build into the evening when we’ll have 16-19mph from Stevenson to Hood River and 13-16mph from Mosier to Doug’s. High temp: 84 in Hood River.
On Thursday, the heat low shifts inland and a solid temp gradient develops across the Cascades. Offshore: strong high pressure to complement the inland heat low. Ensembles are in good agreement (for now) about wind strength: 22-25mph for Dawn Patrol from Viento to Mosier. Afternoon: 24-27mph from Stevenson to Hood River with 25-29mph from Mosier to Rufus with 22-25mph at Arlington. This is The Cooldown You Were Looking For – conditions should be relatively steady and long-lasting.
Quite a bit of uncertainty presents itself on Friday. As of this morning, there’s about a 60% chance of cooler air dropping down from Canada along the coast and rain moving inland. In this scenario, the eastern Gorge will be the best place to find wind, but conditions will be quite gusty, especially near Rufus. Models hint at westerlies lingering into Saturday before uncertainty rises and the chances of wind fade. Have fun out there today. Hope to get back out there with you soon!

Good morning, neighbors! Warmer weather is on tap for most of this week, but not for the end of the week. Nope. TATAS thinks you might want an extra layer starting Friday or Saturday to keep your tatas warm and cozy – we have about a 60-70% chance of cooler, wetter weather for the Friday-Saturday period. Between now and then – short-shorts weather sticks around Tuesday through Thursday when highs will be over 75 but under 90. Fishing weather: windy today, pretty darn good Tuesday and Wednesday, and windy again Thursday and Friday.
It’s Monday, September 7th, Labor Day. Celebrate the power of labor. Remember when labor unions were strong and wages were living wages? Remember when jobs came with protections and benefits? Ah yes, the good old days. Let’s bring them back! Weather for this day of fighting for the rights of workers will be cloudy to start then mostly sunny all through the Gorge. Glenwood started the day at 45 – they’re very happy to not have a killing frost yet – it was a slow start to gardening season. Hopefully it’s a long finish!
Today’s start: cloudy to the west, partly cloudy to the east, and 50-60 degrees, mostly. We finish partly cloudy with temps ranging from 70 in Stevenson, to 72 in Hood River, 75 in The Dalles, and 76 in Pasco. West wind builds to 15-20mph between Stevenson and Mosier this morning with 20-25mph from Lyle to Boardman. Afternoon: 15-20mph from Stevenson to Avery with 15mph at Rufus and less wind to the east.
High pressure builds inland overnight. Temps drop enough that the dewpoint may meet the temp, in which case we’ll have a little bit of Nothing cloud along the Nch’i Wana. Elsewhere: clear and chilly to start: 40-50 degrees. By afternoon, full-on blue sky takes over with temps in the upper 70s to low 80s in the lowlands. Wind will be calm most of the day with the exception of a short period of 10mph east wind near Stevenson mid-morning.
Warmer weather is forecast on Wednesday. A few low clouds start the day. Temps: 45-55 in the morning. Afternoon: 84-87 with enough high clouds to make for a pretty sunset. Wind will be east 15mph near Iwash (cock-a-doodle-dong) Rock, Stevenson, Home valley, and Viento in the morning. By midday, the wind turns light and variable. Afternoon 2pm, it turns westerlies and eventually builds to 15-20mph from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-15mph from Lyle to Avery.
Desert heat cranks up Thursday afternoon (88 degrees in Pasco) while temps on the west side drop to the upper 70s. This results in a windy day through the Gorge. Uncertainty rises starting Friday. It’s likely we’ll see cooler, breezy weather with a chance of rain. Saturday brings (probably) even cooler weather with continued sprinkles. Sunday: also cool, but probably not wet. Models then suggest a warming trend for the next seven to ten days. We’ll see how that extended forecast plays out, won’t we? Safe travels. -TATAS
