Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! Pretty much all of us get a rest day from wind sports today (Tuesday), but there’s plenty of other awesome things to do: that starts with the dirt on the trails – it’s pretty darn good right now. Wednesday’s unlikely to bring enough wind, so you’ll be well rested for Thursday. A decent setup fires up moderately strong westerlies all through the Gorge pretty much all day Thursday. Clarity about the Gorge wind forecast (if not the overall weather pattern) declines on Friday and persists into the weekend, at least for now. Coast people: the south coast will be windy through Friday, and other parts of the coast will have wind through Thursday (see coast forecast for specifics).
Tuesday opened up with impressively flat gradients: 30.17/30.17/30.17 and light/variable wind all through the Gorge. Easterlies build mid-morning to 15mph at Stevenson, Home Valley, and potentially Viento with 10mph at Iwash/Rooster Rock. The wind holds for a few hours. It drops to 10mph or less after 2pm. East of Viento, the wind remains light, well under 10mph, all day long. River flow over the last 24 hours was 76-108kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 78 in Hood River.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
Wednesday brings slightly stronger easterlies in the morning with the potential for moderate westerlies in the evening. No promises on those westerlies – they usually arrive later than forecast and are weaker than models predict. Dawn patrol brings easterlies at 15mph at Stevenson, Home Valley, and Viento with 20mph at Rooster/Iwash Rock. By 11am, potentially even earlier, easterlies fall to 10mph. Conditions then turn light/variable for a bit. Late in the day, maybe too late, westerlies build to 13-16mph between Stevenson and Hood River. To the east: still calm or very, very light wind. High temp: 83F in Hood River. Remember that AWSI is happening Wednesday through Friday at the Event Site and is not open to the general public.
Offshore high pressure on Thursday combines with a trough (cool air) along the west side of the region and heat in the desert for a decent westerly day. A weak system in the afternoon reinforces the cool air and clouds on the west side and injects some gustiness into the picture. Dawn patrol brings 22-25mph from Viento to Mosier with 11-14mph at Stevenson and also east of Mosier to Rufus. Westerlies quickly climb to 24-27mph from Stevenson to Mosier with 19-22mph east of Mosier to Rufus. Afternoon brings that reinforcing system and clouds to the west side. We’ll have gusty 23-26mph from Stevenson to Mosier with gusty 26-29mph from Lyle to Arlington. After 5pm, the wind drops to 20-23mph east of Lyle and 22-25mph east of Lyle to Arlington. High temps: 76 in Hood River and low 80s in the desert.
Models are all over the place on Friday, but we’re likely to see 17-20mph or more. Better agreement is present on Saturday, when 20-23mph or more is likely. Even more uncertainty is present on Sunday. The best I can say at this point is that there’s a 50% chance of 17-20mph or more somewhere in the Gorge. Similar uncertainty exists in the extended forecast, so I”ll leave you with that. See you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

Good morning, neighbors! It isn’t quite fall yet, but today looks like a perfect fall day: sunshine, light wind, and not-too-hot. Warm weather continues on Wednesday, when temps will be more summery. Temps start dropping Thursday and stay cool all the way through Sunday. Cooler weather is likely to be accompanied by at least a little rain this weekend – not enough to end fire season by any means, but still helpful especially with the cool temps and higher humidity.
This morning, Tuesday, was finally calm enough and clear enough for Glenwood to strut her stuff: it was 36 degrees there this morning! Elsewhere: 40-50 degrees. On tap: a pleasantly warm day: 79 in Stevenson, 78 in Hood River, 82 in The Dalles, and 80 out in the desert. Dead calm wind this morning rises to east 10-15mph west of Hood River midday. Fishing: good.
Another quiet weather day is planned Wednesday: 45-55 degrees and clear sky to start. Afternoon highs range from 84 in Stevenson to 83 in Hood River to 87 in The Dalles and 85 in the desert. Easterlies at dawn will be 15-20mph at Iwash (dick) Rock and Stevenson and Viento. They quickly drop. By midday, we’ll have calm wind (fishing: good). Evening: west wind at 15mph between Stevenson and Hood River with light wind everywhere else.
A weather system approaching on Thursday knocks temps down on the west side, adds a few clouds, and drives strong westerlies. Morning temps: 50-60 degrees with a few high clouds. Afternoon: 74/76/81/86 with increasing low clouds west of Mosier and a mix of mid and high clouds and sunshine to the east. West wind will be 20-25mph between Stevenson and Mosier early with 10-15mph east of Mosier to Rufus. Westerlies quickly build to 20-25mph between Stevenson and Hood River with 25-30mph from Lyle to Arlington. Fishing: bad.
The exact details of the weather Friday through Sunday are unclear, mostly due to timing differences between models. Generally speaking, you can expect cool (under 80) weather with showers possible starting Friday night. I can’t give you an exact wind forecast as models are all over the place. The wind is likely to be westerly, but the strength and timing is uncertain for now. Fishing: questionable. Starting Monday, warmer, dry weather is in the cards for a while, but there’s about 10 degrees of variability in the forecast highs. Precision forecasting: not possible yet. Safe travels. -TATAS
