Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There’s not much precipitation of any sort in the forecast between now and the 18th or so. There’s a chance of a little snow on Friday night into Saturday morning, but that’s about it for the next ten days. Please continue with your dryland training regimen! Despite the lack of new snow, Wednesday looks like a great day to play in the mountains – it’ll be sunny all day. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 0′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 0-1000′ overnight. Wind: NE 20 in the morning, NW 20-25 in the afternoon, and WNW 15-20 overnight.

Thursday will be sunny all day. High clouds move in overnight. The FAF will be 0-1000′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and somewhere between 4000′ and 8000′ overnight as warmer air moves in above the low-level cold air mass. Wind: WNW 15-20 early, LTW in the afternoon, and S 5-15 overnight.

Friday starts high overcast and continues to add clouds. There’s a chance of some light snowfall overnight. The daytime FAF will be 4000-8000′. Overnight, the snow level will fall to 0′ near Mt. Hood thanks to low dewpoints. About 0.1” water equivalent is forecast, for about an inch of snow. Wind: S 5-15 during the day and SE 10 overnight. Another inch of snow is forecast on Saturday morning before the weather dries out again in the afternoon. Sunday looks sunny. Looking deeper into the forecast, we see dry weather with a building inversion – daytime temps on the mountain are likely to climb above freezing each day. Next chance of significant precip starts around the 18th, but models do not agree on the snow level. We’ll keep watching. Enjoy the sun today!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!

Here is a new event: “Unwind from your day with a calming mindfulness experience along the Indian Creek Trail. Each session will include walking meditation, gratitude practice, and connection with others. Emily, your guide, will facilitate individual and group experiences through a practice known as “forest bathing” or “shinrin yoku.” Please come prepared for uneven terrain although there is no significant elevation change. The total distance walked will be between one and two miles. Please be prepared for rain and darkness. An umbrella and lantern/flashlight are recommended. We will meet at the entrance to the trail near the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road in Hood River, Oregon. Open to ages 9+ Suggested donation $10-20 per session. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Mondays in November: 11/7, 11/14, 11/21, 11/28 from 5:15-6:15 .”

Cycling

Now we have freeze-thaw conditions. Please avoid trails that are exposed to the open air, in other words, trails that aren’t under the tree canopy. If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
