Wednesday. Still great riding on Mt. Hood!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s snowing up on Mt. Hood this morning (it’s Wednesday). Expect on-and-off light snow flurries under cloudy sky today. Less than 1” of new snow will fall. The snow level will be less than 1000′ all day. Wind will be NW 15 early, W 20 in the afternoon, and NW 10 overnight. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Thursday starts off with some mid-level clouds and clears up during the day. Sunshine hangs around until the sun drops below the horizon, and then stars will shine above the slopes. The free air freezing level will be near the surface early, rising to 1500′ or so in the afternoon. Thursday is probably going to be the last day we see perfect packed powder. After that, we’ll head towards hardpack and then possibly even corn snow. Wait n’ see…. Wind on Thursday will be NW 10 early and light and variable in the afternoon.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Friday looks clear and sunny with warming temps in the afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 2000′ in the morning and 6000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be SW 10 early and W 10 later in the day.

Saturday currently looks warm and sunny. The free air freezing level will be 8000′ in the morning and 9000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be SW 10-15 all day long. Sunday starts off warm and sunny. Clouds move in during the afternoon. The current run of the GFS model suggests we’ll see light rain or wet snow on Sunday night, for .1-.3” water value. If that falls as snow, it’ll be an inch or two. If it falls as rain, that’s fine, and shouldn’t impact the increasingly corn-like snow surface much.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Tuesday. You’ll see east wind at 5-10 all day, picking up just a little tonight. Thursday looks like east wind at 15-20 or less all day. Friday brings E 25-30 and Saturday brings E 35-40.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m thinking this morning about the nature of public discourse. During the last election cycle, many people took the words of our new president seriously, but not literally. In light of the executive orders over the last few days, it is starting to appear that the campaign rhetoric was meant to be taken literally.

I find this fascinating, because it points to a society where bluster and bombast is accepted as normal, acceptable speech. It points to a society where we expect a lack of follow-through from our political leaders, and perhaps from each other as well. We listen with cynicism and make our own interpretations of what is or is not true.

Part of this, I think, is the committed statements people issue. Rather than saying, “I will try to do X,” our politicians, and often us, say, “I will do X,” when X may be an impossibility or may come with high hurdles to implementation. Use of the will-won’t dichotomy, rather than more nuanced speech, leads to cynicism and distrust on the part of those expecting action.

We’re probably not going to get our public figures to stop issuing proclamations of intent, but we can minimize such speech in our own life. And we can attempt to make sure our words will match our future actions. Be honest. Be nuanced. Be awesome. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s cloudy out there this morning, and at least at my house it’s just drizzling, not snowing. Expect a few light sprinkles or snowflakes this morning. Temps will rise into the upper 30’s this afternoon under cloudy sky. East wind. No rainbows. Thursday may see a few on and off sprinkles under cloudy sky in the morning. Looks like we’ll see partly cloudy sky later. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and upper 30’s in the afternoon. Friday will probably start off with a Nothing and see sunshine in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and the mid 30’s in the afternoon. Next chance for precip is Sunday evening, when we’ll probably see light rain.
