Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast
Hi friends! Gusty and unreliable westerlies are on tap the next couple of days thanks to a low pressure system moving inland. This feature brings instability, rain, and a chance of thunderstorms – none of this is ideal for Gorge winds. More reliable, teen-strength westerlies are in the cards for Monday. Depending on where a high pressure ridge locates on Tuesday, we could see anything from moderately strong westerlies to moderately strong easterlies. That day of uncertainty transitions to easterlies Wednesday, Thursday, and probably Friday. Beyond that: too much uncertainty to make guesses!
Saturday started off with pressures of 29.92/29.87/29.87 and high clouds already in place ahead of the incoming weather system. Early wind was light/variable most places with 11-14mph at Viento. Westerlies slowly build to gusty 13-16mph this morning from Stevenson to Hood River. A little more wind is possible early afternoon – gusty 16-19mph from Stevenson to Doug’s.
Ahead of incoming rain mid to late afternoon, we could see a burst of very gusty 18-24mph westerlies for 60-90 minutes ahead of the rain. You’ll have to be in the right at the right time to catch this, and it might not even happen, so don’t count on it. River flow over the last 24 hours was 61-80kcfs, river temp is 68.7F, and high temp forecast is 74F in Hood River and upper 70s in the desert.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast
Sunday looks messy: a low moves inland with lots of moisture/rain wrapping around it. Early wind will be 7-10mph between Stevenson and Avery with gusty 19-22mph from Celilo to Boardman. Significant rain is likely all through the Gorge between mid-morning and early to mid afternoon. Wind during this time will likely fade to the point where none of us are wind-sporting. After 2pm, westerlies rebuild to gusty 15-18mph (potentially more, but probably not) from Stevenson to Mosier with 23-26mph from Lyle to Arlington and beyond. Rain continues east of Arlington until 2pm and slowly tapers off out east – this means launch sites east of Arlington will take longer to see strong-enough wind. High temps: 62 in Hood River and mid 60s in the desert.
Monday brings another round of moderate westerlies as low pressure exits east and a trough/front combo is present along the coast. Early wind will be 11-14mph from Viento to the Hatch with 7-10mph at other locations west of The Dalles. Between The Dalles and Boardman, Monday starts with 16-19mph. Westerlies slowly build to gusty 17-20mph between Stevenson and Doug’s as low clouds dissipate west of Hood River. Between Avery and Rufus, the wind fades to 13-16mph, and east of there, even less! High temps: 71 in Hood River and low 70s in the desert.
Models are all over the place on Tuesday’s Gorge wind forecast – while the GFS deterministic calls for low to mid 20s near Hood River, the Euro ensemble has anything from east wind to strong westerlies. No forecast is possible for now. Best I can say is that the potential for westerlies stronger than 17-20mph is low.
Wednesday and Thursday bring easterlies. Strength isn’t clear, but we should see 20mph or more. 20Mph east wind is more like 16mph west wind, but still… foil sports should be possible both days somewhere between Iwash/Rooster Rock and Viento. It appears that Friday will start with easterlies and quickly turn light/variable. Beyond that, uncertainty spikes. Trying to predict beyond next Friday will only result in lots of changes, so I’ll leave it here for now. Have fun out there on the Nch’i Wana!

Good morning, neighbors! Rain is coming, yay! You have until this afternoon to harvest all the blushing tomatoes and pull all the ripe peppers. And the chanterelles – save them before the rain soaks them! A cool, showery weekend gives way to warmth next week – peak heat will be Friday, when The Dalles touches the upper 80s.
Today is Saturday. It’s already cloudy out there, which is probably why Glenwood only dropped to 42 degrees this morning. Today’s highs will be darn fine for outdoor activities like harvesting everything you can before rain arrives: highs range from 72 in Stevenson to 74 in Hood river to 78 in The Dalles and 80 in Pasco. Drizzle starts up near Celilo first (go figure) around 5pm and then fills in from Hood River to The Dalles by 8pm. After 8pm, rain settles in all the way east to Hermiston. Today’s wind stays under 15mph this morning and rises to 20mph this afternoon between Stevenson and Rufus with a short burst of stronger wind possible after 2pm ahead of the incoming rain. Be prepared for that possibility if you’re out on the Nch’i Wana (Columbia).
Intermittent rain continues into Sunday morning, intensifies midday, and tapers off in the afternoon. A period of moderate to heavy rain is possible between 8am and 2pm west of The Dalles and until 5pm east of The Dalles. Morning temps: 50ish. Afternoon: 61/62/67/63. Those Hermiston watermelons will be so sad with temps that low! Wind will be under 10mph west of The Dalles in the morning with 15-20mph east of The Dalles. Afternoon wind, after the rain tapers off, rises to 15-20mph west of Lyle and 25mph from Lyle east to Boardman.
The only rain we’ll see Monday will be a tiny bit of drizzle west of Cascade Locks for a few hours in the morning. Elsewhere: dry. It’ll be cloudy west of Mosier and sunny to the east in the morning. Morning temps: 45-55 degrees. Afternoon: 70-74 degrees with increasing high clouds. Wind will be westerly at 10-15mph in the morning and 15-20mph in the afternoon.
Tuesday looks warmer and sunnier with highs in the 73-77 degree range. Models are arguing over the wind direction and speed, so hold off on making plans if they’re wind/no-wind dependent. Wednesday and Thursday looks warmer and sunnier with east wind. Iwash Rock n*ked tanning plans: off for Wednesday and Thursday. Friday afternoon, when the wind will be light/variable and temps will be quite warm, will be a better time to visit the “natural” beach. Starting next Saturday, there’s too much uncertainty in the forecast models to make forecasts, so I won’t. Instead, I’ll go off and meditate now. Safe travels. -TATAS
