Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s yet another sunny and windy day in the Gorge. Before I forget, we have several wind-related events. And the CGWA, or at least Bart of the CGWA, would like to point out that all wind-and-water people are “wind-surfers”. Anyway, there’s a meet n’ greet with Alex Aguera and Dave Kalama at Big Winds tonight at 4:30. The Gorge Downwind Champs is happening all week, with shuttles running from Viento to HR, so be on the lookout for lots of boats, SUPs, etc headed downwind and yield the right of way to them. Also, Bridge of the Gods Kitefest today through Sunday, with the blowout currently scheduled for Sunday. Is that it? If not, please let me know! Oh, one more, a slider jam on Sunday.

For today, we’ll be under the influence of weak high pressure off the Cali coast and a weak low pressure system near Vancouver Island, eh. This system will move closer during the day, dragging cooler air (relatively speaking) into the western half of the region and also disturbing the vertical stability of the air. That will make the wind rangier than usual. We’ll have 10-13 west of Viento this morning with 21-15 from Viento to the Wunderbar. The wind further east will be in the 15-19 range, except for Arlington, which will be in the 10-13 range. The wind will slowly fill in to the east and west of Hood River as the day goes on. For the afternoon, we’re looking at inconsistent 22-27 from Cascade Locks to Rufus with 16-20 further east. Best chance of steady wind will be near Cascade Locks and Stevenson… oh, the Meljes 24 North American Championships are happening in Cascade Locks right now!

Looking at Thursday… that previously mentioned low moves inland, sending marine clouds all the way past Hood River and possibly dropping some sprinkles near Cascade Locks. We’ll start the day with up-and-down 10-16 under the clouds with 14-18 east of the low clouds, probably east of Lyle. The clouds probably won’t burn back until after noon, at which point we’ll have wide-range wind of 22-26 between Cascade Locks and Arlington. Beaches between Cascade Locks and Lyle will probably be especially gusty, at least until late afternoon.

Looking at Friday, the models suggest the wind will shift back to western-Gorge-only. The day starts with 7-10, builds to 10-13 midday and 15-18 in the afternoon. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the wind beat the models. The GFS currently suggests light and variable wind on Saturday morning with light westerlies late. Again, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the wind beat the model, but it would have to be way, way off to make a difference on Saturday.

Now, here’s why we don’t do long-range forecasts: as of yesterday, the GFS said E 10-15 for Sunday, which happens to be the Blowout. As of this morning, the GFS says W 26-30 on Sunday afternoon. There’s still inconsistency between various models for the weekend, so the forecast is pretty unreliable at this point.

Kiteboard for Cancer and Camp Koru Need You!

Kiteboard for Cancer happens July 14th through 16th at Hood River’s Event Site. They are still looking for a few volunteers. If you have some time, sign up now. If time is difficult to come by, make a donation to support camps for young adult survivors of cancer. I donated already. Your turn!

Random Morning Thoughts

Seeing as how it’s windy and I have a very busy four days coming up, I think I’ll set this aside and go windsurfing. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

All the mtb trails locally are open. This will change next week when Hospital Hill and Whoopdee will likely close for the summer due to fire danger. Ride them now. Moto is now done for the season in Hood River County, as we are at IFPL 3. Today looks like a great day for road biking – light wind.

Upcoming Events

Today’s the first day of the Meljes 24 North American Championships in Cascade Locks. Bart says these are the rockingest boats there are, and the racing should be spectacular – the event runs through Sunday. The Bridge of the Gods Kite Fest runs Thursday through Saturday in Stevenson, and the Gorge Downwind Championships for SUP, outrigger, and surfski are happening all week with a downwind race on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. There’s Gorge Cup windsurf racing Sunday at the Event Site. Also this weekend, while we’re at it, there’s a work party at Starvation Creek from 9am to 1pm.

Other things to do today include a meet and great with Aguera and Kalama, two world-famous watermen, at Big Winds at 4:30. Ladies Kite and Windsurf night kicks off at 5 at the Hood River Event Site, there’s ping pong at the armory at 5:30, and there’s Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6. There are sailboat races at the Hood River Marina at 6.

Tonight is Families at Family Man. If you have kids, take them up to do some riding from 6pm on. There’s free pizza, and the county commissioners are going to be there seeing how Family Man is used as part of the #lovefamilyman campaign. If there’s one night to be there, this is the one!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
