Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Wednesday morning, and the groom started out as perfect as it could possibly get (see Teacup’s FB post). Snow will fall on it today, 4-5”, giving you a shot at some fresh tracks. After today, the only chance of snow in the next five days or so is 1-3” on Saturday, perhaps a bit more if the orographics kick in. Temps stay cool through at least Sunday, meaning the corduroy will be the loveliest packed powder you can imagine.

Let’s look at Wednesday. It’s a snowy one. The snow level will be 2500′-3000′ this morning and will fall to 1000′ by midnight. About 0.4-0.5” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today. Call that 4-6” powder. Another 0.2” WE is forecast tonight for 2-3” dry, fluffy powder. Wind will be SW 20-35 this morning, WNW 20-30 this afternoon, NW 25-35 this evening, and NW 25-35 Thursday morning.

The wind quickly fades on Thursday morning as the sky clears and the flow turns northerly. The weather will be sunny for the entire 24 hour period. The free air freezing level will be 500-1000′ in the morning, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 0′ overnight with 850mb temps at -3C overnight (warmer than expected with a FAF of 0′). Wind on Thursday starts at NW 25-35 and quickly drops to N 5-10.

Friday will be sunny all day, yay! The free air freezing level will be 0′ in the morning and will slowly rise to 5500′ after midnight. Temps at 850mb (5000′ or so) will be -3C in the morning and 0C in the afternoon. Wax accordingly. Wind: N 5-10 in the morning, NE 5 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight.

Saturday will be a snowy day. Models don’t yet agree on how snowy it will be; they call for 0.1” to 0.5” WE with very breezy condition in the afternoon. The snow level starts around 4500′ and falls to 1000-1500′ overnight. Sunday looks sunny and chilly with temps in the low 20’s to start. Generally speaking, conditions on the groom will be excellent all the way through Sunday, and off-piste conditions won’t be too shabby either. Enjoy this stretch of excellent snowsport conditions!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Please do not ride Syncline! It’s super muddy and there are creeks running down the trails. If you ride, you’ll do major damage. Please ride gravel roads instead! Same goes for other trails – muddy enough that you’ll damage them. Perhaps you could try the Deschutes or Klickitat trails, but roads and gravel are better choices for the health of the trail systems. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
