Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Wednesday, and it’s another fine day to hit the groom, the parks, and the Nordic trails. All the slopes picked up a couple inches last night, which is just enough for excellent corduroy.

The weather stays dry this morning. Just before sunset, some snow arrives. Sadly, it quickly switches to rain as 850mb (5000′) temps rise to +5C overnight. Wow. That’s pretty warm – 40F! The snow level will be 2500′ this morning, 4000′ this afternoon, and 7000′ overnight. About 0.5” water equivalent is forecast tonight. That might be an inch or two of snow before a switch to pure rain. Wind: SW 15-25 this morning, S 10-20 this afternoon, and SW 30-50 after midnight.

Rain continues on Thursday. Fortunately, the wind will be SW, so orographic enhancement of precipitation will be minimal. The snow level will be 7000′ in the morning and 8000′ from mid-afternoon on through the night. About 0.3” rain is forecast during the day followed by 0.1” overnight. Wind: SW 30-50 in the morning and SSW 20-40 from the afternoon on through the night.

Friday starts out warm and drizzly. Temps cool during the day, and the drizzle switches to wet snow then dense snow. The snow level will be 8000′ in the morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. About 0.1” WE mixed precip is forecast during the day. That’s followed by 0.1” WE that falls as snow overnight. Call it an inch of new atop a wet base. Wind: SW 30-50 in the morning, SW 20-30 midday, WSW 25 in the afternoon, and SW 15-30 after midnight.

Looking at Saturday, we see the snow level around 4000′ with cloudy sky and a trace to an inch of new snow. Sunday starts dry but turns snowy. A few inches of new snow should accumulate. Looking deeper into the future, we see a mostly-snowy week for Mt. Hood. Have a great day today!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

DO NOT ride Syncline! It’s super muddy and there are creeks running down the trails. If you ride, you’ll do major damage. Please ride gravel roads instead! Same goes for other trails – muddy enough that you’ll damage them. Perhaps you could try the Deschutes or Klickitat trails, but roads and gravel are better choices for the health of the trail systems. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
