Gorge Wind Forecast

Once again, it’s a very smoky morning in the Gorge, with the Underwood AQI reading 151. That’s officially unhealthy – all people will experience effects, especially if they are exercising. With west wind in the western Gorge and east wind in the eastern Gorge today, the air quality won’t improve much, if at all. Moving on to the wind, rather than the AQI forecast…

For Wednesday, we start with a weak westerly gradient of .03 and light and variable wind. Looks like the wind will build to W 10-13 from Stevenson to Rowena this afternoon with E 5ish east of Rowena. River flow is 147kcfs and river temp is 71 degrees.

Marine clouds push into the western half of the state on Thursday, courtesy of an approaching low pressure trough. That system will also kick off a chance of thunder, especially to the S and E of the central Gorge. Before taking that into account, the forecast is Dawn Patrol at 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with 14-18 from Lyle to The Dalles and 10-13 at Stevenson. We’ll see the wind hold at the upper end of that range through early afternoon. Models suggest late afternoon westerlies at 25-29 from Lyle to Rufus with 18-22 in the western Gorge and 10-13 east of Rufus. There’s also the possibility of an Executive Session (after work, dinnertime, early evening) at 26-29 from Stevenson to the Hatchery. If thunderstorms fire up, expect the wind to be quite gusty with the potential for unpredictable shutdown.

Looking at Friday, upper flow turns from S to NW, stabilizing the air mass from west to east. A deep marine push into Portland assists cross-Cascade gradients. We’ll start with Dawn Patrol at 24-27 from Viento to Doug’s, probably strongest at Mosier. The wind quickly builds to 27-31 from Stevenson to Rufus with 20-23 farther east. As of right now, the weekend forecast looks like 12-15 Saturday and 18-22+ on Sunday with some variation between models.

BONUS: Jones Wednesday: 24-27. Thursday: 24-27. Friday: 24-27. Sauvie’s Wednesday: 17-20. Thursday: 17-20. Friday: 12-15. Coast Wednesday (north/central/south). No/no/nada, NW swell 4′ at 10 seconds building to NW 7 @ 13. Thursday: 5-10/15-20/20-25, NW 6′ @ 12. Friday: 5-10/15-20/25-30, NW 6′ @ 9.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s cool and smoky this morning, and the AQI is 151. I was blown away yesterday by all the people out early riding bikes. It’s officially unhealthy to do that right now. Better air returns on Thursday. Temps for Wednesday will be in the upper 50’s early and low 90’s later. Light west wind. No rainbows. Slight chance of PM thunder over the Cascades. Thursday starts in the mid 60’s and climbs to the low 80’s with afternoon high clouds. Strong west wind. No rainbows. Slight chance of thunder over the Cascades. Friday looks clear or perhaps high overcast, at least early, with nice clean air. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and mid 80’s in the afternoon. Strong west wind. No rainbows.
