Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

A few more inches of snow fell on Mt. Hood last night, and we’re looking at another inch or so today. On Thursday night, a stronger, slightly warmer system drags in up to a foot of new snow. The weather then turns too warm for snow by Friday afternoon. A cloudy day Saturday with a bit of mist/fog/drizzle gives way to sunshine (probably) and above-freezing temps (almost certainly) on Sunday.

Wednesday will have intermittent flurries and mostly cloudy sky in an unstable atmosphere. The snow level will be 1500′ this morning, 2000′ this afternoon, and 1500′ overnight. Up to 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today for up to an inch of new snow. Just a trace falls overnight. Once again, graupel will be part of the mix today as the unstable atmosphere tumbles the snowflakes up and down and up and down. Wind: WSW 15-25 this morning, W 20 this afternoon, and SW 5-10 overnight.

Thursday will be high overcast in the morning. Flurries in the afternoon give way to heavier snowfall overnight. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ after midnight. UP to 0.1” WE is forecast during the day for up to an inch of new snow. Overnight, up to 1.0” WE is forecast, perhaps even more with orographic assistance. That’ll give us 9-12” of relatively dense new snow. Wind: SW 5-10 in the morning builds to SW 10-20 in the afternoon and becomes W 40-50 in the evening and overnight.

Friday starts with lingering flurries, stays cloudy, and warms in the afternoon. We’ll see a switch to mixed precip in the evening and drizzle overnight. Don’t freak. Just a trace of snow is forecast in the morning, and just a trace of drizzle is forecast overnight. Wind: W 45-50 in the morning, NW 25-35 in the afternoon, WNW 15-20 in the evening, and WSW 10 overnight.

Saturday looks cloudy, foggy, and increasingly drizzly. The snow level starts at 6500′, rises to 7500′, and falls back to 6500′ after midnight. A trace of drizzle falls during the day, and up to 0.3” drizzle falls overnight. Wind will be SW 5-10 most of the day, SW 15-20 in the evening, and W 25 overnight. Models suggest the weather will clear and warm for Sunday with moderate west or WSW wind. Let’s leave it there for now, but note that the following weekend is currently looking warm and sunny!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Active weather continues through the weekend, and that sets us up for gusty, moderate westerlies. It appears offshore high pressure will arrive sometime Sunday and potentially set up a couple days of stronger, more reliable westerlies. Wednesday starts out calm. Late morning westerlies rise to gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Arlington. In the afternoon, head east of Lyle for gusty 20-26. Be aware that we’re in an unstable atmospheric environment today, so the wind will be particularly gusty and may be interrupted by showers and hail. River flow readings yesterday were 109-151kcfs, river temp is 47F, and high temp forecast is 50F. Thursday will be light and variable all day. High temp: 53F. Friday starts with gusty 17-20 far west, calm or light westerly from Swell to Doug’s, and gusty 17-21 out east. Afternoon wind settles at 7-10 from Hood River to Doug’s with gusty 20-23 from Avery to Arlington. Saturday’s forecast is currently light/variable. Sunday’s looks stronger as offshore high pressure builds.

Cycling

Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. My understanding is that Post Canyon is snow-free to the top of Borderline. IT’s been raining on and off. If it rained more than 0.1”, it’s likely to be slick and muddy. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. With rain often stopping on the west side of Hood River, you may have better luck at Whoopdee or Syncline or Hospital Hill (which is full of ticks and poison oak). Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
