Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Thank the stars for the deep snowpack on the ground, because we’re entering a week or so of marginal temps combined with light precipitation. Models bounce temps at 850mb (5000′ or so) between -2C and +2C through the end of next week. In that period, we’ll pick up some high mountain snowfall, but lower elevations will likely see mixed precip or rain. Don’t let that deter you. Wet snow can still be fun to ride!

Wednesday kicks off with 4” of new snow on the ground at 5000′. A bit more is forecast tonight, but it’s likely to switch to rain overnight. So, go get it. The environmental snow level today (it’ll be much lower in the Gorge) will be about 3500′ and will rise to 8000′ late and then dip to 6500′ overnight. Before that happens, you’ll find a period of sunshine above 6000′ deep clouds. Wet snow starts up mid afternoon. Between then and tomorrow morning, approximately 0.2” to 0.4” water equivalent is forecast. We will probably pick up 1-3” snow before a transition to drizzle late tonight. Wind: SE 20 this morning, S 20-40 midday, SE 35 in the afternoon, and S 30-50 overnight.

Thursday may start off with some lingering drizzle, but it quickly turns just-cloudy with fog up high. The next system moves in early afternoon. First: drizzle. Next: a bit of snow. The snow level will bounce around between 5000′ and 6500′ during the day and falls to 3500′ after midnight. About 0.3” WE is forecast, mostly overnight, Let’s call that 1-2” of wet snow after a period of drizzle or mist. Wind: S 30-50 for much of the day dropping to SW 20-30 in the evening and holding overnight.

Friday brings light snowfall. The snow level will be 3500′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon (there could be a short period of mixed precip), and 4000′ after midnight. Just a trace is forecast during the day. Overnight: up to 1” of new snow from 0.1” WE. Wind: SE 25-35 in the morning, S 15-25 in the afternoon, and SW 15-25 overnight. Light snowfall continues on Saturday. Sunday will probably be mixed precipitation. Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

An outdoor related event coming up: Gorge Ultimate starts its Winter League January 8th on Sundays from 5-7 at the Hood River High School Lighted Turf, but will be in a gym if snow is on the turf. Sign up to be on a team by Dec 31st, or be a sub: https://gorge.ultimatecentral.com/e/winter-league-2023

Cycling

DO NOT ride Syncline! It’s super muddy and there are creeks running down the trails. If you ride, you’ll do major damage. Please ride gravel roads instead! Same goes for other trails – muddy enough that you’ll damage them. Perhaps you could try the Deschutes or Klickitat trails, but roads and gravel are better choices for the health of the trail systems. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
