Gorge Wind Forecast

West wind sticks around for the next couple of days before fading in response to building inland pressures on Friday. Saturday and Sunday both look warm and sunny with plenty of east wind for you to get on the river.

Wednesday brings our first real weather system of fall. That’ll drive gusty, moderately strong westerlies. Early pressures were 29.98/29.88/29.84 for .10 (PDX-DLS) and .04 (DLS-PSC). Pre-dawn wind speeds were gusty 18-22 from Viento to Swell with single digits most other places. Arlington started in the mid teens. With this front moving through, the forecast is tricky. Ahead of the rain, expect 20-24 from Viento to Mosier. That’s going to shift east wind this rain – afternoon wind will be 21-24 from the rain line (Mosier?) to Rufus with 18-22 at Arlington. Stevenson will be drizzly and in the single digits most of the day. As this system pushes east late afternoon, there’s a brief chance of a couple hours of gusty 24-28 between Avery and Rufus. Given the setup, I’d say there’s less than 50% chance of this happening. River flow readings are 67-85kcfs, river temp is 66F, and high temp forecast is 71F.

Offshore high pressure joins a low hanging out on the east side on Thursday. This is a setup that often beats model predicts. Those models call for light westerlies under rain to start the day west of The Dalles with 10-13mph east of The Dalles. Wait until the rain ends, early afternoon, for best results. Models then say 17-20+ from Mosier to Avery with 10-13 at Rufus. I’m going with gut instinct and saying we’ll see 22-26 from Mosier to Rufus. Fingers crossed. High temp: 69F.

Friday sees high pressure build across the region. Dawn Patrol is your best guarantee. Head to Viento or Swell for 16-19. Models hint that the wind will fade to light westerly by the afternoon as temps equalize across the Cascades. A heat low sets up along the west side for the weekend; this drives easterlies at 20-30mph both days with high temps near 80F. Enjoy the wind!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! Thursday brings a showing of the bike movie “Reset” at River City at 8pm. The Post and Pint will shift to 5pm to accommodate this. The movie is free, and there’s a raffle to benefit the HRATS.

Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is at 5pm this week (9/27).

Cycling

It’s still dusty and dry out there, but that should change after today! All Hood River County trails are closed to motorized use until further notice. These trails are closed to all uses: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and any lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.

Other news: some nice Hood River folks went and cleared the Smith Creek trail by St. Helens. That loop is now open. As a matter of fact, I’m not sure of anything being closed. No report yet on Boulder Lakes or Gunsight, but I’m sure someone will email me after changing this. Caveats: the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
