Gorge Wind Forecast

Wednesday looks like a transition day. Thursday and Friday bring westerlies. We’re back to very strong east wind for the Saturday to Monday time period. For Wednesday, expect easterlies at 10-15 early. The wind goes calm by mid-morning and turns around to W 12-15 east of The Dalles in the afternoon with light west wind or calm wind in the central Gorge. Thursday starts out calm. By late morning, offshore high pressure helps drive west wind at 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River. Friday starts with W 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River. Midday wind looks like W 14-17. That fades in the afternoon as cold air moving in from the NE starts to turn the wind to easterly. Watch for 40+ at Rooster Rock Saturday through Monday with the strongest winds Sunday.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Random Morning Thoughts

Mt. Hood Mountain Weather Forecast

It’s raining up on Mt. Hood this morning, and if you’re looking for the other kind of precip, you’ll have to wait until at least Thanksgiving. For Wednesday, Mt. Hood stays showery. Snow level: 10,000′ early and 6000′ this evening, rising back to 10,000′ Thursday morning. Precip totals: .1” water value (WV) daytime and .1” WV tonight. That means that a trace to 1/2” of new snow could fall tonight. Wind: WSW 30 through the evening and W 10 overnight.

Thursday looks cloudy with a few sprinkles possible late Thursday night. Snow level: 10,000′ falling to 9000′. Wind: W 10 becoming NW 20-25 Thursday night. No accumulation. Friday’s forecast depends on the exact track of an incoming storm system; the GFS has it brush the mountain, and the ECMWF keeps it to the north. General picture: snow level 9000′ early, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight after any precip passes. Total precip? Unclear, but not much, and what does fall will fall as rain. Wind: NW 20-25 becoming light and variable then N 10 after midnight. Mountain weather looks dry and clear through next Wednesday.

Gorge Weather Forecast

This morning’s forecast is exactly why it’s important to check in on the weather daily. You’ll remember that there was no mention of freezing rain in the forecast on Monday. Well, there is a chance of a few freezing sprinkles (just a few) this morning, just in the Hood River Valley. Other locations are above the inversion and above freezing. By midday, we’ll go from upper 20’s to low 40’s. East wind early. Light westerlies later. No rainbows. Thrusday looks like a Nothing day with higher clouds in the afternoon and a trace of rain overnight. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 50’s later. West wind. 11% chance of rainbows. Friday looks cloudy with scattered sprinkles becoming partly cloudy overnight. Temps will be near 40 early and in the mid 50’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. 4% chance of rainbows. We’re probably back to the Nothing for the weekend. Next chance of troubling weather is next Wednesday. We’ll keep an eye on that.

Road and Mountain Biking

**Alert** We have now entered freeze-thaw season. Multiple locations have been dropping below freezing overnight. This means that exposed trails will potentially be delicate and subject to damage. Please limit your riding to areas under the canopy. The next HRATS Post Canyon trail work party is on November 17 at 9:30 at Family Man.

Upcoming Events

It’s Wednesday. The only event on my community calendar today is free yoga at 10am at the FISH food bank in Hood River. Looking at the weekend: HRVHS gear swap is on Saturday. The HRATS have a trail work party in Post Canyon on Saturday (meet at Family man at 9:30am).
