Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Yesterday certain provided the predicted “nukage”. Averages between The Wall and Arlington (and probably Avery) topped 40mph at times, and gusts exceeded 60. Unless everyone was at Threemile, there just weren’t that many people on the river! We won’t see anything like that in the upcoming week or so, but we’ll have a couple days of wind – today and Sunday look like your best shots, and Saturday afternoon is a possibility too. Tomorrow, Thursday, is your rest day as rain spreads all across the region and shuts down the wind.

Wednesday starts with pressures of 30.16/30.11/30.03 for gradients of 0.05 and 0.08. Survey says… go east for best results. Survey also says go east of any low clouds, so watch the cloud line as you drive. Areas in the western Gorge, west of The Dalles, will languish at gusty 11-14ish all day as clouds persist. Another weather system approaches in the afternoon. This does no favors for the western Gorge. Give areas to the east some time to benefit from what minimal heat the desert can muster up. You’ll find 23-26 from Avery to Boardman this afternoon with a chance of 25-28 near Rufus. River flow yesterday was 95-144kcfs (which went perfectly with 40mph), river temp is 72F, high temp forecast is 72F for Hood River, and 14013 fish made it past Bonneville yesterday. That’s important, right? You need to go to Wild Columbia Salmon in the Windance parking lot for fish and smoked salmon samples!

Thursday will be totally different than any day we’ve seen for months and months. It’s going to rain! Wind will be light and variable in the morning. IN the afternoon, we’ll have westerlies at 7-10mph. High temp: 67F. Friday will be light westerly early and light easterly later. “Light” is defined as less than 10mph. High temp: 76F. Saturday starts light and builds to the upper teens or low 20’s. There’s a fair bit of spread in the model forecasts for Sunday, but mid to upper 20’s east of The Dalles is possible. I’ll be on retreat for a week starting Friday. I’ll do a forecast that morning, most likely, and then I”ll see you next Friday. Don’t bug my housesitter, okay? He can’t do the forecast for you.

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
