Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy Wednesday, everyone! Models have added a little oomph to today’s forecast over what we saw in yesterday’s runs. We’ll hold on to wind for Thursday and Friday, but we’re almost certain to fall to “light” on Saturday and go easterly on Sunday. After that, there’s just too much range in the possible outcomes to even guess at a forecast. Now, back to my regularly scheduled yard sale: Armstrong 7’7” x 121L SUP foil board, like new, used about 6 times – $1900. Takuma TK carbon wingfoil board, 110L – $700. Takuma ProFoil 1900 wing with 75cm mast: $550. Combine the board and foil for an excellent beginner setup (it’s what I learned on) at $1200. Lemond 53cm steel road bike (fits up to 5’8” human) – $250. PPC Link SUP foil/surf foil board, 6’4” x 118L: $800. Email twomirrors at gmail to purchase this awesome gear.

Wednesday sees a weak weather system moving through. Better it moves through and messes things up this morning than midday when everyone is chasing the wind. Pressures at 6am were 29.94/29.83/29.79 for gradients of 0.11 and 0.04. There are hints of Rufus in those numbers… Give this frontal system a chance to move through for the best results. How will you know? When those high clouds are east of wherever you’re planning to go. The wind will be in the 21-24 range from Viento to Swell early. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mosier was also in the low 20’s. Other locations are all over the map and will remain so until things stabilize. By late morning or early afternoon, we’ll have 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River with 25-28 from Mosier to Rufus and 20-23 at Arlington. River flow yesterday was 99-180kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 80F.

Thursday starts with marine clouds in the metro area and mostly clear sky here in the Gorge. Gradients don’t look great on the deterministic GFS, but the ensembles are a lot more optimistic. We’ll start the day with 11-14 from Stevenson to Arlington. Midday wind, according to the deterministic GFS, will be 13-16 from Hood River to Avery with 11-14 to the west and 10-13 to the east. Afternoon wind rises to 17-20 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 11-14 east to Arlington. I would not be surprised, given the ensembles, if this forecast is too low. High temp: 79F.

Friday will be a sunny day. Westerlies start at 15-18 from Viento to Hood river and rise to 17-20 from Stevenson to Avery. Once again, ensembles are a lot more optimistic than the deterministic. Fingers crossed. As of this morning, Saturday looks to start with 10-15 and turn light or calm. Light easterlies are forecast on Sunday. It’s unclear when this heat wave will break, so it’s unclear when the wind will return. We’ll wait for more clarity before taking any guesses. Have fun on the river today!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
