Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
A little bit of snow today leads into a couple days of clear, warmer weather. What will the weekend bring? Well, we actually don’t know yet; the GFS thinks it’ll be snowy, and the ECMWF thinks it’ll be dry. So we’ll just have to wait and see. And we’ll be doing that with a night-before forecast on Thursday night since I’m on call for that Thursday to Friday period.
So. Wednesday. Clear sky over 6000′ clouds to start with a bit of snow midday. Clear sky returns in the afternoon and sticks around. The snow level will be 1000-1500′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and the free air freezing level will be back down to 0-1000′ overnight. Up to 0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast for up to an inch of new snow. Wind: NW 30 (potentially problematic for a few lifts) early in the morning drops to NW 15-20 by the afternoon and SE 15 overnight.
Thursday looks sunny all day. The free air freezing level will be 0′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight (with 5000′ temps in the upper 20’s). Wind will be SE 15 in the morning, SE 25 in the afternoon, and SSE 15-25 overnight.
Clear, warmer weather is forecast on Friday. The free air freezing level will be 1000′ in the morning (temps in the upper 20’s on the slopes) and 5500′ in the afternoon (temps in the low 30’s). The snow level falls to 2500′ overnight, but it’s unclear yet if we’ll have after-midnight snow or not. Wind: SSE 15-25 in the morning, SE 20 in the afternoon, and S 10-20 overnight. Gorge Wind Forecast
West wind today gives way to east wind on Thursday and again on Friday. If you want no wind at all, you might just get that on Saturday. However, there’s a wide variation in model forecasts for the weekend, so we really don’t have a good idea of winds yet. For Wednesday, the days starts with 10-13 in the west and 15-18 east of The Dalles. Midday wind picks up to 17-21 from Lyle to Rufus and holds at 10-13 to the west and east. River flow readings are 60-80kcfs, river temp is 39F, and high temp forecast is 48F. Thursday starts with 25-30 at Rooster and Stevenson with sub-freezing temps. Afternoon wind drops to 20 at Rooster and 25 at Stevenson. It also picks up to 10-15 east of Viento. High temp: balmy at 53F. Friday starts with 25-30 at Stevenson and 30-35 at Rooster. The wind holds all day and picks up to 5-10 east of Viento. High temp: balmy again at 53F.

Hood River Weather Forecast
A wee bit of drizzle early gives way to clear sky in the afternoon and partial nothing overnight. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Moderate westerlies. 89% chance of rainbows. Thursday will be partial Nothing early and sunny later. Temps start in the upper 20’s and rise to the low 50’s. Easterlies. No rainbows. Friday will be nearly identical to Thursday. Yay. Sun. Warm!

HRATS has a fundraiser at Ferment Brewing on the 16 from 6m to 8pm. There’s a seed swap and plant sale at Rockford Grange at 2pm on Sunday the 19th. April 2nd is an end-of-season party at Meadows Nordic. April 15th at 10am is the “Run with the Wild 5k” fun run to support the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.
Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.
Cycling
Well, now the trails are going to be frozen solid. That makes for good riding if you can avoid the invisible icy spots. On the off chance that things thaw later this week under sunny sky, don’t ride. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
