Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The amount of change in the Mt. Hood forecast over the last few days is nothing short of dramatic. Remember that we started with a foot of snow and 5” of rain for the weekend. Now we’ll be lucky if the mountain sees one lonely inch of snow on Friday.

For Wednesday, we’ll have some high clouds early and sunshine later. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 11,000′ in the morning and 13,000′ in the afternoon. 5000′ temps will be in the low 40’s all day, and wind will be NE 10 early and NE 20 in the afternoon.

Thursday looks sunny. The FAF will be 13,000′ all day and 11,000′ after midnight. Temps will be near 40 early and near 50 in the afternoon. Light and variable wind.

Friday starts out clear and quickly turns cloudy. The snow level will be 11,000′ early, 5500′ when the precip hits, and 2000′ in the afternoon and evening. Very light precip in the form of snow starts around 10am and continues through Saturday morning. Sadly there will only be .1” WV, for an inch or so of snow. SAD! Wind will be W 20 in the morning and WNW 30-35 in the afternoon, which will impact lifts above treeline. The wind will drop to N 20 after midnight.

Saturday looks mostly cloudy. The FAF will be 2000′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ after midnight. Wind will be N 20 in the morning and NE 10-15 in the afternoon. Sunday also looks cloudy. Looking at the long-range forecast, the GFS keeps us dry for the next seven days. The ECMWF brings some precip in during the middle of next week.

Random Morning Thoughts

Abuse of power is rampant in our society. We see it play out in sexual harassment, bullying in schools, and workplace situations. There are many approaches to dealing with bullies, whether they be little or big, but most of them don’t work. Some smart grownups decided to ask 13,000 kids what worked for them, and the results of that survey are enlightening. The most helpful thing you can do is have a supportive social network that contains people in power positions. I’ll keep this short, but you can get more information by using The Google to look up “youth voice project”. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We’ll have east wind at 50mph all the way through Thursday at Rooster Rock. Stevenson will see 35ish and Viento 20ish. Friday starts off with east wind at 20-25, quickly goes calm, and turns to W 23-28 between Stevenson and Rufus after 11am.

Gorge Weather Forecast

For Wednesday and Thrusday, we’ll have the Nothing. Temps will be near freezing early and in the mid 30’s later. East wind. No rainbows. Friday starts with the Nothing. A few raindrops, snowflakes or sleet fall between 10am and 2pm, but that’ll be 1/10” at most. Temps will be sub-freezing early and in the mid 40’s after 11am. East wind early turns westerly around 10am. 54% chance of rainbows. The long-range forecast is indicating a quick return to dry weather.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Even though we have the Nothing, you’ll want to stay away from trails exposed to open air – they’ll still thaw, leaving your bike coated in mud and your tracks damaging the trails. I do have a report that Post Canyon is frozen solid and rideable. The HRATS have a fundraiser on the 14th at Double Mountain. If you decide to road ride or gravel grind, watch out for icy areas in the fog zone. Speaking of mixed surfaces, the Cold Lap is at 3pm at Dirty Fingers every Saturday.

Upcoming Events

There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30, free Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6, and YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45. The HRATS have a fundraiser on Thursday night at Double Mountain, and the Big Winds Locals Sale is on Saturday.
