Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Mt. Hood finally got a good dumping of snow! Yay! Over a foot fell last night, beating the forecast. That often happens with strong W/NW wind, and I need to remember to adjust accordingly. Anyway, snow will continue through midday, tapering off and turning to sunshine. The snow level will be around 1500-2000′ early, 1000′ in the afternoon, and at the surface tonight. Wind will be WNW 30 in the morning and NNE 15 in the afternoon.

Thursday looks clear, but models disagree on the period from Thursday night on. Expect sunshine on Thursday with the free air freezing level (FAF) at the surface early and 5500′ (barely – temps will be right around freezing) in the afternoon. NE wind at 15 early goes to NW 15 in the afternoon and NW 25 by Friday morning. The groomed run skiing should be fantastic on Thursday.

Friday will probably start with a beautiful sunrise due to high clouds. We’ll likely see a couple inches of snow on Friday, but models are all over the place on amounts and timing. Same goes for wind due to the depth of the cold pool. For the weekend, the GFS keeps us dry. The Euro brings in a lot of precip. This means that forecasting is pretty much impossible. Sorry.

Random Morning Thoughts

I had some cool stuff happen yesterday, and my day today started with something equally awesome. I’m noticing myself getting a bit riled up and agitated because off all these happy things: I’m happy that I’m happy.

It’s pretty common knowledge that our thoughts can impact our mood. If we feel depressed, we can make it worse by thinking about how depressed we feel, thinking about how we want to feel differently, and being frustrated that we feel the way we do. That exacerbates the depression. The same can happen when we feel good, although it’s less common. Being excited that we feel good can take that sense of contentment into agitation.

The best way of “dealing with” our emotions is often just being present with them. Fighting with them, stuffing them away, or encouraging them can take us out of the present. Adding thought layers to our feeling layers will often amp us up or down. This is problematic because the present, the right now, is the only place we can work through our emotions and increase our capacity to tolerate each and every one of them. What’s here right now is what’s here. Be with it as it is. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Wind Forecast

How about some westerlies for Wednesday? Yes? Okay, light west wind this morning picks up to 18-22 between Stevenson and The Dalles from 10am to 2pm or so. After that the wind will back off to 10-13. Thursday starts with E 15-20 and turns to W 10-13 in the late afternoon. Friday starts off with light wind and picks up to E 40+ in the eavening. Saturday looks like E 50.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s raining out there this morning, but the rain will taper off quickly, ending by 9am and leaving us with sunshine. Temps today will be in the low 40’s all day, dropping below freezing tonight. Watch out for icy roads. Moderate west wind. 99% chance of rainbows early. Thursday starts off chilly with temps in the mid 20’s. GFS indicates a partial Nothing followed by sunshine. Euro calls for snow late Thursday night. Afternoon temps will rise to the upper 30’s. East wind early. Light westerlies in the afternoon. No rainbows. Friday looks like high clouds all day with a few scattered snowflakes. Parkdale might see 1/2-1”. East wind. No rainbows. The GFS and ECMWF are in complete disagreement for the weekend – the GFS keeps us dry and the ECMWF has it snowy. The ECMWF is a bit of an outlier on this, but it’s worth watching.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Post Canyon is currently closed to prevent trail damage. Syncline was good two days ago. I imagine Nestor Peak is good. Whoopdee is probably a no-go due to mud and rain and freeze-thaw. Same for Hospital Hill.

Upcoming Events

It’s Wednesday morning. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30pm and Zumba at the St. Francis House in Odell at 6pm. There’s free YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45pm.
