Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Wednesday morning. The weather this week will be dominated and driven by a trough of low pressure offshore and inland. Weak systems will move through the region from time to time, adding some energy to the system, kicking off a few sprinkles, and giving us moderate westerlies.

For Wednesday, we’ll have light west wind in the morning with gradients of .02 and .04. River flow is 70,300cfs and temp is 68 degrees. Models differ on the wind strength today; we have predictions ranging from 13-16 to 20-23. No matter how strong the wind becomes, it will be gusty and inconsistent, especially in the western Gorge where sprinkles may fall. Best chance to get on the river will be mid-afternoon ahead of an evening weather system.

This pattern continues on Thursday. Light wind in the morning everywhere. 5-10 in the western Gorge in the afternoon with 17-20 east of The Dalles. Gusty. Inconsistent. Unreliable. Friday sees that trough of low pressure shift inland, which could give us a slightly more reliable round of westerlies. The day starts out light. Afternoon wind looks like 18-22 from Stevenson to Rufus. Looking at the weekend, models disagree, especially about Sunday; the Euro swings in a cold front, giving us a short-lived period of strong westerlies. The GFS does not agree with this. We”ll have to wait for model agreement before predicting.

BONUS: Jones Wednesday-Friday: nope. Sauvie’s Wednesday-Friday: nope. Coast (north/central/south). Wednesday: W5/W5/X, W swell 5′ at 8 seconds. Thursday: W5/W5/W5, W 4′ @ 10. Friday: SW10/W5/X, W 4′ @ 12.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the things that surprises me every day I work with clients is how fulfilled and content I feel at the end of the day. My surprise comes in part because of how highly I value flexibility in my life, and also because my fulfillment came from athletic activities for many years. But this isn’t about me. It’s about something that generalizes to most people.

Over the course of life, we find things that make us happy. We stick with those things. Sometimes this works out over the long run, but something the joy we take from those activities starts to fade. We’re left uncertain what to try next, especially when we may have vetoed some of the options based on past experience.

It’s important to remember that we change over time. Things that might have felt boring, uninspiring, or burdensome in the past might be things we’d love now. All those things we found uninteresting in the past are worth revisiting. While our memories of those experiences stay (relatively) unchanged, our perspective on life may have changed dramatically. This means we can experience all those things anew. Give it a shot: you might find some real gems in what previously seemed like dirt. May you find contentment. Have an awesome day.
