Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Wednesday, and it’s another day of offshore flow in the Pacific Northwest. Wind today will start out as east 5-10, pick up to e 20-25 between Rooster and Home Valley. Viento should have E 10-115 or so. The wind will last through early afternoon and then back off to 5-10 after 1pm.

Thursday starts out light and variable. A weather system approaches during the day. This will bump the wind up to gusty 24-28 from Stevenson to Arlington late morning. Western Gorge wind from Stevenson to Mosier will back off to gusty 18-22 in the afternoon. Areas east of Mosier (might be east of The Dalles) will stay at gusty 24-28.

Friday looks quite rainy. If that won’t dissuade you, you’ll find gusty easterlies at 20-25 near Rooster Rock and 5-10 from Cascade Locks to Viento. Models currently suggest light westerlies on Saturday and slightly stronger westerlies on Sunday, perhaps 12-15. That said, the weather will be quite active over the next several days, meaning precise forecasting isn’t possible.

BONUS: Jones Wednesday-Friday: nope. Sauvie’s Wednesday-Friday: nope. Coast (north/central/south). Wednesday: W5/N5-10/15-20, NW swell 6′ @ 8 seconds. Thursday: W5/X/N5, W 6′ @ 14 (surfing!). Friday: S15-20/S 30-35/S15-20, W 7′ @ 11 with rain.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s October. I’m not sure how that happened already, but it did! Here in the Gorge, October is Happiness Month, where folks are encouraged to do three things that are scientifically proven to increase happiness. Those things, surprisingly, are not kiteboarding, windsurfing, and downwind paddle-anything, although those activities can help too!

The three simple, easy, no-expensive-gear-required things you can do are (drum roll)… 1) reflect on three things you are grateful for (like the ability to end sentences in prepositions); 2) perform a random act of kindness; 3) take a moment of silence to pray, meditate, reflect, drink a cup of tea, look at a sunset, or whatever. Just take a moment of silence.

These are simple things you can do. Give it a shot this month. Do these activities over your morning cup of coffee and see what sort of effect it has on your day. May you be happier. Have an awesome day.

Thursday starts out clear and turns cloudy with light snowfall overnight. Snow level 6000′ early, 4000′ with the onset of precip and 6000′ after midnight. Total precip 5am to 5pm: .6” water value (WV) for an inch of new snow followed by 1/2”+ rain (orographic enhancement is possible). Precip 5pm to 5am Saturday: .6”, all of which falls as rain . Wind Friday: WNW 15 early rising to W 30 in the afternoon and becoming WNW 15 overnight. It’s worth keeping an eye on the middle of next week; models agree on significant precip with the snow level around 5500′.

Road and Mountain Biking

The dirt, sadly, has reverted to dust in Post Canyon and on the 44 Road. Not sure about places to the west and north where the rain was heavier. Be careful what you wish for in terms of rain – it now looks like we’ll get TOO MUCH rain for Post Canyon between Friday and Monday! The 44 Road, even Fifteenmile, should end up good.

Upcoming Events

It’s Wednesday, and there’s a by-donation yoga class at 10am at FISH food bank in Hood River. Coming up this weekend, Hood River County has a work party on the 130 trail meeting at Post Flats at 9 on Saturday morning. When complete, this quad trail will be an alternate way to climb to the top of Borderline. Saturday’s also the annual Woodchucker’s Ball at Pacific Hermitage. Come help the monks split and stack firewood for the winter. Potluck meal at 10:30, work to follow, tea to follow work.
