Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Hope for ski season is popping up in the models; the GFS brings cooler temps and precipitation back around the 21st. The Euro waits a couple days longer. All of you should just cross fingers and do snow dances and whatever other superstitious activities might help bring the snow to the slopes sooner rather than later. For the next week or so, models (mostly) keep us too warm for now, despite those outliers that drag snow in starting Tuesday. That would be ideal, wouldn’t it? Let’s vote for that and veto the warmer suggestions by the GFS and Euro.

Wednesday will be clear then high overcast. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 11,000′ or so. Wind: SW 15-25 for the 24 hour period. Clouds Thursday morning add a little drizzle mid morning or late afternoon. Total rainfall for the 24 hour period will be around 0.1”. Snow level: 10,000′ early falling to 7000′ by mid-morning and holding through Friday morning. Wind will be SW 15-25 in the morning, SW 10-20 in the afternoon, and S 5-15 overnight. Friday looks sunny all day. The FAF rises from 7500′ in the morning to 10,000′ in the afternoon wind S or SW wind at 5-15.

Saturday looks dry and warm with temps on the slopes in the low 40’s under sunny sky with light wind. Models drag in some rain for Sunday, but the precipitation totals are all over the place – anything from a quarter inch to an inch. After that, model spread really increases. If you want to vote for the best one, vote for the operational GFS. It brings snow back as soon as Tuesday. Just vote for the GFS in general; it returns winter to Mt. Hood a few days earlier than the Euro does. Big question: will we have ski season by Christmas? If the GFS wins the forecast battle, yes. If the Euro does, it’ll be really, really close. In the meantime, you know the mantra: snow dances and dryland training!

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
