Gorge Wind Forecast

The next few days in the Gorge don’t have much in the way of wind, but the models like the idea of strong easterlies for at least part of the weekend.

Wednesday starts off with light westerlies. The wind builds to W 7-11 this afternoon from Cascade Locks to Mosier, possible out to The Dalles as well. River flow is 122kcfs and river temp is 58 degrees. Thursday starts out calm, picks up to E 10-15 near Stevenson midday, and goes calm again in the afternoon with a chance of light drizzle. Friday looks quite rainy as a solid cold front moves through. The far west Gorge (Multnomah Falls area) will probably see gusty, rainy 15-20. In the afternoon, late afternoon that is, we’ll see gusty 18-22 from Stevenson to Viento, 7-10 from Swell to The Dalles, and gusty 24-28 (maybe) from Avery to Arlington.

If you’re wanting more reliable wind, look to Saturday. Easterlies at 25-30 early build to 30-35 in the afternoon and hold overnight. You’ll find this wind all the way from Rooster Rock to Viento, setting up a fine day for an east wind downwinder. Sunday starts off with east 30-35, but the windspeeds will take a midday nosedive into the “light” range as a front approaches.

BONUS: Jones Wednesday-Friday: nope! Sauvie’s Wednesday-Friday: nope! Coast (north/central/south). Wednesday: S10/S10/LTV, W swell 7′ at 12 seconds. Thursday: S25-30/S15-20/LTV, W 10′ @ 12. Friday: W5/LTW/LTV, W 11′ @ 13.

Mt. Hood Mountain Weather Forecast

The next few days on Mt. Hood don’t have any snow (plenty of rain, tho!), but the forecast does hold the potential for some snow at the beginning of next week. For Wednesday, the mountain will be cloudy. Free air freezing level (FAF): 6500′ early, 10,000′ overnight. Wind: W 10 rising to WSW 20 in the afternoon and W 15 overnight.

Thursday starts out cloudy. A front will slowly move southward, eventually starting up some drizzle on the mountain and turning to rain after midnight. Snow level 10,000′ rising to 12,000′ after midnight. Models disagree on precip amounts, so let’s call it up to .2” overnight. Wind: W 15 rising to WSW 40 after midnight. Friday will be rainy during the day and clear after midnight. Snow level 12,000′ falling to 8000′. Total rainfall: 1.5” between 5am and 5pm with a trace after that. Wind: WSW 40-45 during the day falling to NE 10 after midnight. If the forecast for Monday/Tuesday holds, Mt. Hood could receive 4-8” of new snow above 5000′.
