Sunday Gorge wind forecast & Gorge weather: cool, breezy, and wet today. Warming trend into next week.

Hi friends! Autumn continues to impact the region with the possibility of rain today and the certainty of lots of moving parts. Westerlies are on tap today, but you should expect gusty and unreliable conditions. Forecast reliability improves on Monday, when moderate westerlies, mid to upper teens, are likely. Models are leaning towards a windier…

Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!

SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Autumn continues to impact the region with the possibility of rain today and the certainty of lots of moving parts. Westerlies are on tap today, but you should expect gusty and unreliable conditions. Forecast reliability improves on Monday, when moderate westerlies, mid to upper teens, are likely. Models are leaning towards a windier day on Tuesday, but uncertainty is quite high. We’ll switch to east wind on Wednesday and Thursday โ€“ strength TBD โ€“ and probably find ourselves with light/variable conditions on Friday. Or maybe strong wind. So many possibilities! Beyond Friday, undertainty is quite high โ€“ The Gorge wind forecast is guesswork beyond that point!

Sunday morning started off breezy with pressures of 29.98/29.94/29.88 for gradients of 0.04/0.06.

Most locations between Stevenson and Arlington were in the 10-13mph range to start the day. Rowena area was light/variable, and Threemile was reading 22mph on the iWind/iKite sensor. A low spinning in the desert today drives the wind. Unfortunately, it also carries the potential to disrupt the wind entirely. If you stay west of it, between Stevenson and Doug’s, you’re likely to find up-and-down 15-18mph from mid-morning on into late afternoon except when it’s raining โ€“ the wind may die off then.

East of Doug’s, surface wind models suggest 25-28mph this afternoon, but I’m guessing the wind will under-perform. During the 11am-5pm window, rain is forecast east of The Dalles all the way to Boardman. This is likely to negatively impact both wind quality and strength. Honestly, the forecast is pure guesswork… VERY up-and-down 15-25mph becoming steadier west of Arlington after 5pm when the rain will be contained to areas east of Arlington. You’ll also have a shot at gusty 20-25mph ahead of the rain this morning east of Arlington. River flow over the last 24 hours was 64-89kcfs, river temp is 68.2F, and high temp forecast is 61F in Hood River and low to mid 60s in the desert.

How to interpret the Euro Ensemble: this is 50 different initial conditions. If the colors are similar for a given day, forecast certainty is high. If the colors vary wildly, uncertainty is high and you should only use pencil on your calendar.

Monday brings moderate westerlies as active weather continues. Early wind will be 13-16mph from Viento to Hood River, less than 10mph near Stevenson and Rowena, and 19-22mph from Avery to Boardman. The wind fades to 7-10mph in the afternoon east of Mosier and holds at 15-18mph between Stevenson and Hood River. High temp: 71F and increasingly sunny in Hood River.

Models are still all over the place for Tuesday, but they’re now leaning towards westerlies rather than easterlies. Let’s call it 20mph(ish) between Stevenson and Mosier in the morning, filling east to the Rowena zone in the afternoon. That forecast is subject to change due to high uncertainty in the forecast.

Easterlies are forecast on Wednesday, but strength is uncertain. Probably 20mph or more. Thursday looks to start with easterlies and fade in the afternoon, potentially turning light westerly. As of now, Friday looks light and variable. Or maybe not. Friday might bring moderately strong westerlies โ€“ you can see all the possibilities in the Euro ensemble image. Many, many colors are present! Beyond that: too much uncertainty to make a call, so I’ll leave you here for now. Hope to see you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

HYPERLOCAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE

THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! It’s Sunday, and a chilly day is on tap โ€“ we’ll be nearly 15 degrees below normal this afternoon. Take this opportunity to act 15 degrees different to your personal normal. Along with the cold temps, we’re likely to see some rain midday. A warming trend kicks in starting Monday. By the end of the week, we’ll all be pushing the mid-80s. Starting next Saturday, uncertainty spikes, but rain potential remains low (after today) for the next couple of weeks for most of us.

It is a cloudy start to Sunday. Those clouds act like a blanket โ€“ it’s warm! Glenwood started at 49 degrees this morning, and the rest of us were generally 45-55 degrees. Clouds, rain, and cool air aloft keep us chilly today. Highs range from 61 in Hood River to 66 in The Dalles to 63 in the desert. About the rain… models are all over the place on rain amounts. They have been trending down as they take the bulk of this system farther north than intially forecast. See image for anticipated rain at the 50th percentile.

Steady light drizzle is likely from late morning to early afternoon all the way from the metro area out past the Tri-Cities. In the afternoon, rain stops west of The Dalles; a heavier band of moisture makes its way east into the desert and finally exits stage east (beyond the Ti-Citites) after 8pm. Today’s wind: 15-20mph west of The Dalles most of the day. East of The Dalles: 10-20mph this morning. Models want lots of wind this afternoon: 20-30mph, but it will probably be less wind thanks to all the rain. Expect the wind to pick up once the rain stops โ€“ be prepared for that if you’re out fishing.

On Monday, we’ll hold on to some degree of coolness thanks to troughing (cold air) overhead. Morning temps: 50ish with clouds west of Mosier and mostly clear sky to the east. Light rain is likely through 11am west of Cascade Locks. Everyone else: dry. Afternoon brings sunshine for everyone with temps at 71 in Hood River, 75 in The Dalles, and low 70s in Pasco. West wind will be 15-20mph between Viento and Boardman early. Afternoon wind: 15-20mph between Stevenson and Hood River with 10-15mph east of Hood River to Arlington’s Equilateral Triangle, where precipitation goes to die.

Tuesday kicks off partly cloudy and 40-50 degrees. A few clouds linger into the afternoon when temps climb to the low 70s west of The Dalles, the mid 70s from The Dalles to Rufus, and low 70s farther east. Wind: 20mph between Stevenson and Mosier by mid-morning with 15mph from Lyle to The Dalles. Afternoon: 20-25mph between Stevenson and The Dalles with light wind to the east.

Hotter weather is forecast Wednesday: 75-80 degrees for everyone between Stevenson and Pasco. We’ll have east wind instead of west wind: probably 20-25mph between Iwash (schl*ng) Rock and Viento with lighter wind, under 10mph, east of Viento. Thursday looks five degrees warmer with similar east wind in the morning and light/variable wind probably (but not promised) in the afternoon. Warm weather continues on Friday with (probably) light/variable wind but maybe moderately strong west wind. Starting Saturday, the range of forecast highs is 10-15 degrees, which makes it very difficult to write a forecast. For now, let’s call next weekend somewhat cooler and potentially breezy, but probably not wet. Safe travels. -TATAS
