Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Significant snow of the not-so-fluffy type is forecast both Thursday night and Friday night with lesser amounts of snow in between. Models are hinting at a period of warmer, wetter weather to start next week. Hey, no bitching! We’ve had an amazing stretch of cold, dry snow!

Wednesday will be partly cloudy to start and then will add light flurries during the day and night. The snow level will be 0′-1000′ in the morning, 1500′ in the afternoon, and back to 0-1000′ overnight. Up to 0.1” water equivalent is forecast for up to an inch of snow. Wind: SE 10 during the day, SW 5-10 in the evening, and S 10-20 overnight.

Thursday should be mostly dry during the day, but we can’t rule out flurries. Heavy snow moves in overnight, and the snow level could briefly rise enough for some mixed precip. Maybe. The Environmental snow level will be 1000′ or less in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 5000′ overnight as 850mb temps rise to 0C. During the day, just a trace of snow is forecast if any at all. Overnight, models disagree. Call it 0.5” to 1.2” WE for 4-11” of dense snow. Wind: S 10-20 in the morning, E 25 in the afternoon, and S 10-25 overnight.

Snow or mixed precip early Friday quickly gives way to fluffier snow as 850mb temps drop. The environmental snow level will be 5000′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ overnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast during the day for a couple inches of new snow. 0.6”+ arrives overnight for 6-8” of increasingly dry, increasingly wind-affected powder. Wind: S 10-25 in the morning builds to SW 30-60 in the evening and turns to WSW 60 late (enough to affect lifts, but they’ll be closed) and W 45-50 on Saturday morning.

Thankfully that wind will quickly die off, or lifts would struggle. Just a trace of snow is forecast on Saturday under cloud sky. The snow level rises from 1000-1500′ in the morning to 3500′ in the afternoon and 4500′ after midnight. Models are hinting at another round of snow on Sunday. After that: probably warm and wet, but no promises!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

Well, now the trails are going to be frozen solid. That makes for good riding if you can avoid the invisible icy spots. On the off chance that things thaw later this week under sunny sky, don’t ride. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
