Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s one of those days where the GFS struggles to get the wind right. Building high pressure combines with morning clouds in Portland for a day of west wind. How strong? Well… gradients started at .06 and .03, indicating the eastern Gorge is not the place to be. If you do go there, you’ll find 13-6 this morning fading to light west wind from late morning on. The western Gorge, from Stevenson to Doug’s, will have more holding power. You’ll find 5-10 under the clouds near Cascade Locks to start the day with 12-15 from Viento to Mosier and 5-10 near Lyle. We’ll have a slow build to 16-19 today from Stevenson to Rowena. Strongest, longest-lasting wind will be from Viento to Hood River.

Moving on to Wednesday, a trough of low pressure approaches, knocking down the Portland temps. Looks like we’ll have 5-10 near Stevenson and 13-17 from Viento to Mosier to start the day. By late morning or early afternoon, the wind will climb to 26-29 from Stevenson to Rufus. I forgot to say “gusty”. There. I said it. Locations east of Rufus will stay light tomorrow with less than 10mph. Probably. The Euro does like it stronger, with an evening 23-26 session near Roosevelt.

A weak weather system moves through on Thursday dragging clouds of all sorts and a chance of sprinkles into the western Gorge. Despite this, models do like the idea of another windy day. We’ll have 8-12 in the west to start and 16-19 east of Mosier. East of Mosier, the wind will build to gusty 24-27. Models disagree on the Roosevelt wind, once again, with the Euro liking the idea of the wind filling in all the way to Threemile. It’s worth mentioning that the Euro is predicting stronger wind than the GFS on Thursday. Another weather system approaches Friday for another round of westerlies: 22-25 or so.

BONUS: Jones Tuesday: 19-22. Wednesday: 19-22. Thursday: 5-10. Sauvie’s Tuesday: 12-15. Wednesday: 12-15. Thursday: 7-10. Coast (north/central/south). Tuesday: 15-20/25-30/30+, W swell 7′ at 10 seconds. Wednesday: 15-20/20-25/30+, W 5′ @ 8. Thursday: W5/NW5/N 20-25, W 4′ @9.

Random Morning Thoughts

Emotions are funny things. They are naturally part of us, but sometimes our minds or nervous systems or whatever you want to call it will run screaming from particular emotions. These are often emotions we find painful, but they can also be pleasant emotions we learned were “bad” when we were little tykes. You know… pride, love, joy… Sometimes parents, sadly, don’t like to see those things.

So anyway, we avoid feeling certain things. This is a natural defense mechanism. Unfortunately, the result of this is often other feelings, most frequently anxiety but sometimes depression (which isn’t really a specific emotion, but a combination of feelings and physical symptoms).

If you can catch this cycle happening, you’ll gain more power over it. Ask yourself this: “What emotion do I hate to feel?” Take your first response, and attempt to feel it. You’ll likely feel anxiety or fear or even panic come up next. Then see what happens. If you can take a curious stance, you might find yourself amused and amazed by the way your unconscious has learned to “protect” you. Now that you see the cycle, you can learn to feel that thing without panic, and then you can avoid the consequences of not feeling it. Neato! May you be well. Have an awesome day.
