Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Today, Tuesday, starts out sunny on the mountain, but snowy weather moves in soon. We’ll see intermittent snowfall through Friday morning followed by heavier precipitation Friday night, Saturday, and then again Sunday afternoon into Monday. Model spread is significant, both for temps and precip amounts, so nothing is certain beyond Thursday. We’ll stick with the short term forecast.
Tuesday starts clear, but light snowfall moves in and sticks around. The snow level will be 2000′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ overnight. About 0.2” to 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day, for 2-3” new snow. Another 0.2” WE is forecast overnight, for a couple inches of additional decent-quality snow. Wind: W 20 all day, WSW 20-25 in the evening, and W 15 overnight.
Wednesday starts with high clouds and low clouds, turns clear in the afternoon, and becomes cloudy again overnight. No precip. The free air freezing level will be 1500′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. Wind: W 15 early, W 5 midday, W 10 in the afternoon, and light/variable overnight.
Thursday will be mostly cloudy with light snowfall. The snow level will be 4000′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ overnight. An inch or two of snow is forecast during the day, and the same overnight. Wind: light/variable building to W 25 in the afternoon and holding. Forecast certainty falls starting Friday, but generally speaking, we will probably see snow accumulating Friday night into Saturday with cool weather for the weekend. Enjoy.
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.
Gorge Wind Forecast
For the next few days, we’ll have light starts, but don’t let the lack of morning wind fool you. There will be enough (gusty) wind to get you in the river on your floaty toy two out of the next three days. Tuesday starts with single digits in the east and scattered teen-strength reading sin the west. By late morning, as a front pushes in, the wind rises to 22-25 from The Dalles to Boardman. Models suggest a mid-afternoon bump to gusty 25-28 from Rufus to Arlington. River flow is 172kcfs, river temp is 48F, and high temp forecast is 55F.
Wednesday starts nearly calm with areas of light westerlies at 10mph or less. Afternoon wind won’t be much stronger: just 7-10mph between Stevenson and The Dalles. High temp: 58F. Thursday starts calm. As a low pressure trough moves this way, gusty westerlies arise. Midday wind will be 11-4 from Stevenson to Lyle. Early afternoon: gusty 21-24 from Mosier to Avery with 11-14 west of there and 7-10 in the eastern Gorge. The sweet spot will be mid-afternoon when the westerlies rise to gusty 25-29 from Lyle to Arlington. High temp: 56F. Very active weather and large differences in model predictions makes the weekend forecast not worth touching at this point. Have a great day!
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Cycling
Whoopdee has muddy areas that are too wet to ride. Syncline doubletrack is a stream, and it’s best if you don’t ride on it. Go up Maui instead. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations. Post: snow on the upper part of Eldorado. Much of Post is still too wet/snowy to ride. Do not ride in muddy areas or you will do major and sometimes permanent trail damage. If you do, you’ll force people to repair your mess rather than building new trails. Not cool! Ride gravel roads instead. Columbia Hills is rideable with lots of wildflowers.
