Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s a windy start to Tuesday after a windy Monday, and you should jump on it if you’ve got some time. Models suggest today’s wind will die quickly after a breezy start, but gut instinct says the wind will last a little longer. Get it today, because Wednesday looks light and variable. There might be just enough easterly on Thursday for some time on the water. Friday: probably not. Saturday and Sunday: probably.
Tuesday starts with clouds in Portland and strong, steady, stationary offshore high pressure. Westerlies are in the 20-23 range from Viento to Swell with 14-17 near the White Salmon Bridge and 10-13 to the east. Pressures are 30.17/30.08/30.05 at 7am. It looks like the 20-23 will fill in from Stevenson to Hood River and hold through early afternoon. Late afternoon wind drops to 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River with light/variable wind to the east. River flow readings are 57-78kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 75F.
Wednesday looks warm, sunny, and light-and-variable. Temps max out near 80F. Thursday brings light to moderate east wind. They may max out at 15-20mph from Rooster to Viento midday. Get it quickly. The wind fades to “light” easterlies in the afternoon. Friday looks light and variable early with a shot at E 10-15. Models hint at stronger easterlies Saturday and slightly lesser easterlies on Sunday. Warm, sunny weather continue through the weekend. Enjoy!

Local-ish Events
Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! The Columbia Gorge Marathon is this Sunday. Expect lots of traffic in town and also on the Twin Tunnels trail. Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. The Columbia Gorge Tri Club has a weekly workout at Mayer Park in Rowena at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint and Post n’ Pinot are done for the season due to darkness. There’s a free Zumba class at 6pm in the parking lot of One Community Health in The Dalles on Wednesday. Providence is sponsoring a walking program called Healthy Strides. Meets Weds at May Street 5:30pm, through Nov 16. All ages welcome, and there’s swag!
Cycling
It’s dusty out there… Hood River County has reopened motorized use for trails in the NW Area (Post, Kingsley, Binn’s Hill). Other HRC trails are still closed. These trails are closed to all uses, and some might not have signage saying they are closed: Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee, and any lands Owned or Managed by American Forest Management, Broughton Lumber Company, DGS Timber, Green Diamond, Kreps Ranch, Kreps Family LLC, Lupine Forest, Manulife Forest Management, Twin Creeks Timber, and Western Pacific Timber, LLC in Klickitat, Skamania, Stevens, Yakima, Hood River and Wasco counties.
The road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
