Gorge Wind Forecast

As you may be able to tell by the chill in the air in the mornings, something has changed in the weather. We’ve moved into a fall-like pattern, and that means we’ll see better chances for east wind. Our west wind days will be driven by frontal passages and upper level lows that move inland. This means that our west wind days will tend to be gustier and further east. That said, we’re looking at a windy weeks.

Tuesday starts off with light wind and a light easterly gradient. As the day goes on, the wind will pick up to E 25-30 at Rooster Rock and 20-25 near Stevenson. The GFS is also suggesting that the eastern Gorge, Roosevelt to Boardman, will see east wind at 10-15 today, good for you eastern Gorge residents who happen to own foil-things. In the afternoon, the east wind will back off to 10-15 from Rooster to Stevenson and pick up to 4-8 from Viento to The Dalles, remaining at 10-15 in the far east.

Wednesday doesn’t look quite as windy. We’ll have east wind at 10-15 at Stevenson and 15-20 at Rooster Rock until noon or so. After that, the wind will back off and go calm for the rest of the day. Thursday morning looks like E 10-15 at Stevenson and Rooster Rock. The wind will hold through midday and then go calm in the afternoon.

The GFS model is currently predicting a return to west wind on Friday as a frontal system approaches the Northwest. We’re still pretty far out to make a prediction about wind location and timing, given the dynamic nature of this setup. That said, it currently looks like we’ll see west wind at 25-29 on Friday. The wind will be most reliable near Stevenson and east of The Dalles. That said, all locations should see at least a couple hours of decent wind before inconsistency arrives. As of right now, we’re looking moderate westerlies both Saturday and Sunday, but you may have to drive east of Hood River to avoid rain showers and rainbows.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s October, and that means it’s Gorge Happiness Month. Scientific research shows that if we do simple things, we can make our lives happier. Note: these simple things do not involve the acquisition of material things.

First, think of three things you are grateful for. These don’t have to be big things. For example, I am grateful that I live in a place where I can look at two massive, snow-covered volcanoes on a regular basis. I’m grateful that I get to write to all of you each day and help you find more fun in your lives. I’m grateful for the fact that my feet are warm right now. What are you grateful for? (maybe for sentences that don’t end in prepositions?)

Next, do a random act of kindness. Call a friend and tell them you appreciate them. Look a homeless person in the eye and say hello – acknowledge their humanity. Pay for someone’s coffee or bridge toll. You get the idea.

Finally, create five minutes in your day to stop and be in silence. Set down the phone. Turn off the music. Put down the book (kindle?). If you can, do this in the woods or a park, because research shows that being in nature soothes the mind.

If you’re up for a challenge, do each of these things every day in October. Notice how you feel at the end of each day, at the end of a week, at the end of a month. Doing these things and noticing how you feel while you do them will start to change the wiring of your brain. It’s a slow process, but it works, and will bring you more reliable long-term happiness than the fleeting joys we chase as adventure sports enthusiasts. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.

Tomorrow looks similar: 40ish early and 70ish in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks a few degrees warmer than Wednesday. We may see some sprinkles (and rainbows) on Saturday.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s a lot of decent dirt out there right now, although things are starting to dry out again. Remember that there are quite a few closed trails above Upper 8 Track in Post Canyon. Also, there’s a good chance there’s still a bit of snow on Gunsight Ridge. Highway 30 and the HCRHT is closed between Larch Mountain and Cascade Locks, so you can’t ride to/from Portland. Other than that, happy riding!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events are pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 5:45. There’s meditation at Yoga Samadhi with the monks from Pacific Hermitage at 6:30. As part of Gorge Happiness Month, there’s a Happiness Walk at Stratton Agency in The Dalles at 6pm, a “movie for adults” at 6:30 at the Library in The Dalles, a writer’s group at 6:30 at the White Salmon library, and a lecture titled “Notes from the Riverkeepers” at 7pm at the Mosier School.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
