Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s a very smoky morning, and the air quality in Underwood is 171. That’s considered unhealthy for all groups, and all populations may experience health effects. That means you’re not supposed to be outside exercising, FYI. If you do want to exercise, you’ll likely find better air quality west of Underwood. You’ll also find east wind at 15-20 today through early afternoon. You’ll find that wind between Rooster Rock and Viento, making for some fine down-current, downwind runs. River flow is 107kcfs and temp is 71 degrees.

Wednesday sees the heat low shift to the east. In response, the wind will become westerly. The day starts with calm conditions or very light westerlies, only to be found west of Swell. A slow build to 10-13 midday gives you the opportunity to get on the water. There’s a bit of disagreement on the late afternoon wind. Let’s call it 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier with light wind out east.

Thursday is a bit tricky as marine clouds push into the west and the atmosphere destabilizes a bit over the central and east. A straight read of the models gives us dawn patrol at 22-26 from Viento to Mosier. Afternoon westerlies rise to 25-28 from Stevenson to Avery with 13-16 at Celilo and 10-13 east of there. Throwing convective potential into the equation gives us an added qualifier of “up-and-down” as well as “wind speeds may not reach their full potential”.

The western half of the region looks to stabilize on Friday, but areas east of the Cascades continue to experience convection. Models do not agree on the wind speed, with one predicting high twenties and the other predicting low twenties. As of right now, significant model differences exist for the weekend. No forecast for you!

BONUS: Jones Tuesday: 5-8. Wednesday: 24-28. Thursday: 24-28. Sauvie’s Tuesday: nope. Wednesday: 17-20. Thursday: 14-17. Coast (north/central/south). Tuesday: 10-15/X/X, NW swell 4′ at 7 seconds. Wednesday: NW 5-10/nope/no, NW 5 @ 13 & NW 5 @ 8. Thursday: 15-20/20-25/25-30, NW 6′ @ 11.

Road and Mountain Biking

Trails on private timberland (Hospital Hill, Whoopdee, Underwood, and anything else on Kreps, Stevenson, Weyerhauser, etc.) will remain closed to ALL uses until the end of fire session (significant rainfall). Washington and Oregon public lands have now banned smoking and campfires for the remainder of the season, telling you what are some of the main causes of wildfires.

Gorge 400 from Wyeth to Herman Creek has reopened. There are about 7 trees down. Plains of Abraham is open. Trails in Hood River County are now closed to motorized use due to fire danger. Bicycles are fine. The Petersburg Loop east of The Dalles has reopened for road biking. Highway 30 from Memaloose to Rowena has reopened. Canyon Road in Odell has reopened.

Upcoming Events

Today’s day one of the AWSI trade show at Hood River’s Event Site. While the beach and water remain open to the public, the demo area is only open to dealers, riders, and other authorized people. This event runs through Friday. Half of the parking lot is also open to the public.

Other activities today include meditation at 6:15 this morning at Trinity, and another round of mindfulness with the Pacific Hermitage Monks at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30 tonight. Tomorrow night at 6 is family mountain biking, snacks included, at Post Canyon’s Family Man.

Looking at the weekend, we’ve got the Gorge Paddle Challenge in Hood River, Pacific Crest Trail Days in Cascade Locks, and Flattrack Motorcycle races at Eddieville. Coming up Sunday, it’s the Oregon Bigfoot Festival in Trout Lake. If that’s not enough Bigfoot for you, there’s another Bigfoot festival as part of Logtoberfest in Carson this fall.
