Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The resorts are giving it a shot today despite the very strong wind on the slopes. We are looking at over a foot of fresh, fluffy powder incoming, so they have to try! We then head into a very cold day on Wednesday with light snowfall all day. The sun comes out sometime Thursday and sticks around through Saturday. Next system: Sunday morning, probably. Good news in the long-range forecast: temps look to stay well below freezing at 5000′ for at least the next couple of weeks!

Let’s look at Tuesday: it’s one for the storm skiing fiends, for sure. The snow level will be 1500′ during the day and will fall to 0′ in the evening and overnight. About 0.8” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day. Add orographic assistance for 8-12” wind-affected powder. Overnight, another 0.5” WE is forecast. Call that 5-7” of dry, fluffy pow. Wind: W 45 in the morning, WNW 45 (problematic for lifts) midday, NW 30 (problematic) in the evening, and variable to 10 after midnight.

Light snowfall continues on Wednesday with the snow level at sea level. About 0.2” WE is forecast during the day for 2-3” powder. Another 0.1” WE arrives overnight for another inch of fresh snow. Wind: much more reasonable! Variable to 10 early, E 15 in the afternoon, and ESE 20 overnight.

Thursday starts cloudy with scattered flurries and turns clear. The free air freezing level will be 0′ all day, and temps on the slopes will be in the single digits and 850mb temps drop to -19C. Wind: ESE 20 in the morning, E 20 in the afternoon, and E 25 overnight. This could affect some lift ops at Timberline, as they struggle in easterlies.

Friday looks sunny and clear with temps warming into the 20’s in the afternoon. Saturday will be sunny with temps in the mid to upper 20’s. The next system is forecast to arrive Sunday. Bundle up and get yourself some cold powder!

There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Cycling

If you ride in the mud, you’ll do significant and permanent damage to the trail bed. Be thoughtful about your riding choices. Also, it’s winter. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
