Gorge Wind Forecast

Well, I’m not sure what happened yesterday. Everything was in place for a big day, all day long. The only thing I can think of is that upper-level northerly flow may have had an impact. Well, there is one more thing I can think of: weather is inherently difficult to predict! Anyway, on to today…

We have a weak weather system moving through this morning (hence the high clouds). Gradients at 7am were .14 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc). River temp is 57 degrees and flow is 474kcfs. With gradients this strong, the wind should be strong, but the day started off with 20-26 out east and 13-16 in the west. It does look like the wind will build to 24-27 midday from Stevenson (or maybe Viento, depending on clouds) to Rufus, filling in to Arlington after 2pm.

Low pressure inland knocks down the gradients on Wednesday. Models disagree on the wind. The GFS likes 10-13 in the morning and no wind in the afternoon. The Euro likes 18-22 or so in the afternoon. The GFS doesn’t handle this setup all that well, so let’s try 10-13 in the morning from Viento to Mosier and 13-16 in the afternoon from Viento to Mosier.

A whole mess of weather systems impact the region on Thursday. That will make the wind gusty, but strong high pressure offshore should make those gusts really big! Let’s call it 20-24 from Viento to Arlington in the morning with 25-29 from Viento to Arlington in the afternoon.

BONUS: Jones Tuesday: 20-24. Wednesday: 18-22. Thursday: 5-10. Sauvie’s Tuesday: 14-17. Wednesday: 12-15. Thursday: 9-12. Coast (north/central/south). Tuesday: 20-25/25-30/35+, W swell 7′ at 9 seconds. Wednesday: 20-25/20-25/30+, NW swell 5′ @ 8 seconds. Thursday: LTW/LTW/N 5-10, W 5′ @ 9.
