Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The weather is still not cooperating on this Tuesday morning – it’s still raining at base area elevations. The snow level will drop soon, thank goodness, and the mountain will see snow tonight. The snow level will be around 6000′ this morning, 5000′ at 1pm, and 500′ on Wednesday morning. We’ll see up to 1” of rain before the switch to snow around 1pm. After that, about .7-1.0” water value (WV) will fall as increasingly light snow. That’ll give us 6-10” of new snow overnight. Wind today will average SW 25 during daylight hours, W 35 in the evening, and W 45 overnight. That could (will?) impact snow quality on Wednesday morning, but it should also cover up those leeward slopes completely.

Wednesday morning sees continued snowfall, but Wednesday afternoon should clear as dry air moves in from the north. The mountain will see a couple inches of snow on Wednesday morning. The snow level will be 500′ for the first half of the day, dropping to a free air freezing level at the surface overnight. Widn will be W 40 in the morning, and NNE 20-25 in the afternoon and evening.

Thrusday looks clear and sunny. The free air freezing level will be at the surface early, might climb to 3000′ in the afternoon (or not), and will be back at the surface overnight. No precip. NE wind at 20 in the morning, NW 10 in the afternoon, and NW 20 overnight. Friday looks clear and increasingly cold. Saturday looks frigid and very windy. I suspect Timberline will have no lifts on Saturday (they struggle with the east wind) and Meadows will have lift limitations.

Random Morning Thoughts

I had a bit of a mailing list disaster yesterday – my server deleted my account. That pretty much sucked, to put it mildly. Thankfully, I had backed up my mailing list a few weeks ago, so I think it’ll all work out okay in the end.

I’m going to take a moment today to support a great local resource: Hood River Weather. You’ll find local webcams to help you find sun, local temps, and best of all, a local weather chatbox. Actually, I’m mistaken. What’s best is the fact that Larry has created a community around weather; the folks who use his website regularly meet for a beer, food and weather talk. Community is a beautiful thing, and this website is invaluable, as many of you know.

Mr. HRW (Larry) has an annual pledge drive to support the website. Click through using the link above, scroll below the chatroom, and click on the donate button to give him a little financial love. Thanks for supporting a great local resource, and have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For tuesday, there will be light wind in the morning. After 11am, the wind will pick up to gusty 23-28 west of Hood River and east of Rowena, with 10-13 or so in the Central Gorge. Wednesday has high pressure off the coast. That will give us westerlies at 23-27 between Stevenson and Mosier until mid-afternoon or so, when the wind will back off to 13-16. Thrusday starts with east wind at 15-20 and fades to light east wind in the afternoon. Friday looks like E 30, Saturday E 50+, and Sunday E 60++.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s cloudy and rainy out there this morning. The rain will decrease as the day goes on. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and near 50 this afternoon. Light to moderate west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Wednesday sees light sprinkles or wet snowflakes through 9am or so and then becomes dry. People above 500′ could see an inch or so of snow by Wednesday morning. Temps will be in the mid 30’s in the morning. Models disagree about the afternoon, but temps will drop below freezing overnight, for icy roads. Moderate west wind. 78% chance of morning rainbows. Thursday looks cold with clouds in the morning and sun in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and upper 30’s in the afternoon. Light east wind. No rainbows. After that, things look cold for several days.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Post Canyon is currently closed to prevent trail damage. I road Maui and Moab at Syncline yesterday, and they were good. My best guess would be that upper trails have freeze-thaw mud, and will be subject to damage if you ride them. Same for Whoopdee. Buck Creek or Nestor Peak would be a good place to try for a ride. The gravel grinding, as always, is great, and so is the road biking.

Upcoming Events

There’s by-donation meditation and pranayama breathing at Flow Yoga at 8am. There’s pickup touch rugby at 5:45 at the Hood River Marina. There are two more by-donation events this evening: a women’s only (anyone identifying as “female”) mobility, strength and self-defense class at First Light in Hood River at 6pm, and meditation with the Pacific Hermitage monks at 6:30 at Yoga Samadhi.
