Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The forecast for the next 24 hours on Mt. Hood is a bit tricky due to the snow level hovering right around 5500′ tonight. The rest of the week is more clear, with consistent snowfall followed by a period of warmer, most likely rainy weather starting Sunday.

For Tuesday, the day starts off cloudy. Heavy precip starts by 10am and continues through Wednesday morning. The snow level will be 2500′ early, 500′ mid-morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ overnight. The snow level will drop to 5000′ around 4am on Wednesday. With T-Line base at 6000′ and Meadows at 5300′, this is a tough call for ski area base elevations.

About 1.2” water value (WV) falls by 4pm Tuesday. That should give the ski resorts 8-13” of snow, depending on elevation. Tonight’s 1.1” WV is tricker. I think Meadows will see a mix of rain and snow at the base. That said, the resorts should accumulate 3-12” of new, depending again on elevation. If you do the math, we’re looking at two feet of snow for the higher resort elevations. Yay!Teacup and Meadows Nordic will likely see just rain from this system. Wind will be SW 20 in the morning, SW 35 in the afternoon, and SW 25 overnight.

Well, that was complicated, eh? And also a bit unclear, meaning it’s probably worth getting up early on Wednesday to look at how things panned out.

Looking at Wednesday, the snow level will be lower, but so will the precip amounts. The snow level starts at 5000′ and drops to 500′ or so under clear sky overnight. About .4” WV falls during the day, for 4” of new snow. Another .2” WV falls in the evening as light and fluffy powder. Wind Wednesday will be SW 35 early, SW 25 in the afternoon and evening.

Thursday looks partly cloudy early with light snow in the afternoon and somewhat heavier snowfall overnight. The snow level will be 500′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and less than 1000′ after midnight. About .2” WV falls during the day, for 2-3” of powder. Another .4” falls overnight, for 4-5” of powder. Another foot of snow is forecast to fall between Friday and Saturday. As of right now, Sunday looks rainy on the mountain. You’ll want to aim for Saturday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I know I’ve talked about this before, but it’s always worth revisiting ways to manage our busy lives. It’s a well-documented fact that our minds can only hold 7-9 pieces of information in working memory. That means that if you have more items than that to track right now, you’re going to find yourself running circles in your head trying to remember.

This will cause you anxiety. I promise. =)

While keeping lists may not be your favorite thing to do, the simple act of writing things down can drain off some anxiety. It can also help you reality-check the realisticness of today’s plans. You may feel time pressure, but you may have to let go of some of today’s goals in order to reduce today’s anxiety.

Why bother? Because you’ll be more efficient if you feel less stressed. Take a moment to write down all the things you want to accomplish today (yes, everything, including your daily workout and such). See what changes within you after you write it all down. Then reflect on how realistic your expectations are. What did you learn? Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Road and Mountain Biking

Post Canyon is currently closed to all users to protect the trails from damage. Whoopdee is closed to bikes and horses for the same reason. Syncline remains mobbed. I’m not sure about the upper half of Nestor, but the Horse Camp section is in good shape with one tree down.
