Winter Pledge Drive – Support this forecast!

Thank you for using this forecast. I do it as a gift to the community because I want all of you to have more fun in your lives. We’re all busy people, and having an idea of when the snow, wind or dirt will be good allows us to plan ahead. Although I receive occasional support from advertisers, the bulk of my support comes from the generosity of my readers. If you’ve been using this for years, if it’s helpful, brings more fun into your life, or makes you happier in some way, please donate. $12.34 or more gets the forecast delivered to your inbox for a year (I’ll protect your info). Anything over that makes both of us feel appreciative and appreciated, and also pays my grad school bills. Thanks for using the forecast, and thanks for your support. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

It’s a beautiful partly cloudy day on Mt. Hood, and should stay that way all day with clouds overnight and rain after midnight. The free air freezing level / snow level will be 11,000′ or so all day long. Models currently suggest the heavies rain will stay to the north of the Columbia River, leaving Mt. Hood with just 1/10” overnight. We’ll see how that really plays out! Wind today will be SSW 10 in the morning, climbing to SW 15 in the afternoon and overnight.

Wednesday looks rainy on the mountain, although the models still hold the heaviest precip to the north until the afternoon. The snow level will be 11,000′ in the morning and 6000′ after midnight. Up to 1/3” rain will fall by 4pm, followed by another 1/2” rain between 4pm and 4am. Wind will be SW 30 in the morning, rising to SW 40 in the afternoon.

Thursday starts off either dry or with a few scattered sprinkles. The snow level will quickly drop below 5000′, and the mountain will start receiving snow. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 4500′ by 7am and 3500′ around 4pm, dropping to 1000′ after midnight as the sky clears. Around .7” water value (WV) will fall between 4am and 4pm, for 6-7” of new snow. Another couple inches will fall overnight. Wind on Thursday will be SW 40 early, dropping to SW 25 midday and turning to W 25 in the afternoon and evening.

Friday starts out sunny and turns cloudy in the afternoon. Snow flurries start up after midnight with no significant accumulation expected. The snow level will be 1000′ in the morning and 2500′ in the evening with W wind at 20 early and SE wind in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m sitting here this morning feeling quite irritated at Mother Nature. This is the second week in a row that I’m going to have to stay in Portland to avoid ice in the Gorge. While this is inconvenient, it’s also not helpful for me to get irritated or angry. I recognize that, and I’m still irritated.

The thing is, when we wish for things to be other than as they are, we bring up painful and unpleasant emotions like irritation, anger, regret and remorse. I wish it was 70 degrees and sunny, but it’s not. It’s 27 degrees with incoming precipitation. By wanting something unchangeable to change, I make myself suffer.

It’s really quite silly when you look at it like this, isn’t it? A minor irritation can become the focus of our entire world. While it’s important to work to change the things we can, it’s equally important to be realistic about what we can’t change. The weather, for instance. Energy spent in frustration with the weather would be better spent directed at something changeable – our plans for the day, for example. Be safe. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Sunshine this morning and clouds in the afternoon with temps in the mid 20’s early and the upper 30’s later in the day. Freezing rain after midnight. East wind. No rainbows. Temps tomorrow will be just below freezing for most of the day, probably rising just above freezing in the afternoon. Up to 1/4” ice accumulation in Hood River. East wind. No rainbows. Thursday may see freezing rain in the morning if we haven’t warmed up, but most likely there will just be rain sprinkles. East wind early, west wind in the afternoon. 67% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Your trainer bike will be happy to see you today. And so will your XC skis. Sounds like Dirty Fingers has given up – they’re taking the shop ride to Portland on Sunday this week so they can actually ride bikes.

Upcoming Events

It’s Tuesday. There’s free yoga at Flow at 4:30 and at HAVEN (Strong Women Yoga) in The Dalles at 5. There’s pickup touch rugby at 5 at the Hood River Marina Park. There’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu tonight from 5pm to 9pm. At 6:30 this evening, there’s meditation at Yoga Samadhi led the monks from Pacific Hermitage. This remains, and most likely always will, my favorite activity of the week.

Have an awesome day today!
