Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Tuesday morning, and we’re entering into a bit of a pattern shift. Storms will explode far out in the Pacific, turn north, and cruise up to Canada. Depending on their distance offshore, these storms will bring light to moderate precipitation with borderline and fluctuating temps. We’ll discuss all this in the daily details below.

Tuesday starts out with a couple inches of new snow on the slopes and the trails. A brief period of sunshine midday gives way to light snowfall overnight. The snow level near Mt. Hood (in the Gorge) will be 500′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 0-500′ near Mt. Hood overnight. In the period, the environmental snow level (indicative of snow quality) will rise from 3000′ in the morning to 4500′ in the evening and 4000′ overnight. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight, for a couple inches of somewhat dense new snow. Wind: WSW 20 this morning, SW 10-15 during the day, and SW 5-10 overnight.

Wednesday starts out clear with clouds to 6000′ and stays that way until the next system arrives late afternoon with a shot of mixed precip. The snow level will be 0′ near Mt. Hood early, 1000′ in the afternoon, 6500’ish in the evening, and 5000′ overnight. About 0.4” to 0.5” W is forecast overnight. That will probably be mixed precip as temps at 5000′ rise from -2C to +1C with warmer air to the west. A couple inches of wet snow may accumulate. Wind: light SW in the morning building to SE 35 in the afternoon and turning to S 20-40 overnight.

Thursday morning brings light mixed precip and transitions to light snow overnight. The snow level will be 5000-6000′ in the morning and will fall to 4500′ after midnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast, mostly in the evening, for up to a couple inches of wet snow. Wind: S 25-45 early, S 20-35 for much of the day, SW 30-45 in the evening, and WSW 30-35 after midnight. A couple inches of dense snow are forecast on Friday. Models seem to think that 850mb temp (5000′) will hover above 0C for a few days. That brings alternating rain and snow or mixed precipitation to the mountain through the weekend. We’ll keep an eye on it!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

An outdoor related event coming up: Gorge Ultimate starts its Winter League January 8th on Sundays from 5-7 at the Hood River High School Lighted Turf, but will be in a gym if snow is on the turf. Sign up to be on a team by Dec 31st, or be a sub: https://gorge.ultimatecentral.com/e/winter-league-2023

Cycling

DO NOT ride Syncline! It’s super muddy and there are creeks running down the trails. If you ride, you’ll do major damage. Please ride gravel roads instead! Same goes for other trails – muddy enough that you’ll damage them. Perhaps you could try the Deschutes or Klickitat trails, but roads and gravel are better choices for the health of the trail systems. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
