Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies stick around this week when they’re not being badgered by atmospheric instability and thunderstorms. Models hint at a couple of strong westerly days on Thursday and Friday. The stronger wind will be accompanied by cooler temps, but hey, you can’t have everything!

Tuesday kicks off with pressures of 29.75/29.69/29.69 for gradients of 0.06 and 0.00. The wind is mostly light and variable, although Viento’s taking advantage with 15-20 to start the day. We’ll see the wind fill in briefly to 15-18 from Stevenson to Swell before dropping to 11-14 early afternoon. Evening thermals return at 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Yesterday’s river flow was 202-243kcfs, river temp is 52F, and high temp forecast is 78F and muggy.

Wednesday is going to have some serious atmospheric instability, so take the forecast (any forecast) with a grain of salt. The day starts with 15-18 from Stevenson to Swell. It drops to 11-14 midday and returns, thunderstorms permitting, at gusty 21-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles after 2pm. High temp: 78F. Thursday starts off with instability-driven showers all across the land and gradients strong enough for gusty 22-26 form Stevenson to The Dalles with 13-16 out east. Things stabilize in the afternoon and give us 27-31 from Stevenson to Arlington. Hey, that sounds fun! Models suggest another 27-31 day for the eastern Gorge on Friday. We also have relatively good agreement from the ensembles even this far out. After that, we see an offshore low settle in for about five days. That will keep us cool and cloudy with minimal wind. The timing is good, because I’ll be gone on retreat May 5 to May 10. My housesitter does not forecast, but I am looking at having a friend step in for my next retreat. We’ll see! Have a great day!

That race benefits local fire departments. May 6th is also the Repair Cafe at Gorge Makerspace. May 20th is the Gardener’s Faire plant sale at Rockford Grange. June 10th is the Gorge Adventure Race in White Salmon. Multi-discipline = multi-sport day.

Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

There’s going to be a lot of brown pow out there this week. Go get it! Post is snow-free at least to the top of Borderline. Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: Mt. Defiance says you shouldn’t plant your tomatoes, but if you’re below 500-1000′, Hood River Weather and TATAS thinks planting tomatoes this week is a good idea. It’s also time (for me, anyway) to get your beans started indoors. They generally do better direct-sow, but they also generally get eaten by slugs if I do that. If you’re a planner (I generally am not), consider starting next year’s compost pile now. This is ag country, and there’s a lot of manure looking for a good home. Happy gardening.
