Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s been snowing hard all morning on Mt. Hood. As of the writing of the forecast, there was 4” of new. Models call for another half a foot or so today. We’ll head into dry, cool weather on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday morning currently looks to bring very light snowfall, and then the heavens open up Friday into Saturday with up to a couple feet of new snow possible over the weekend.

Tuesday will be snowy all day, but this system will come from the south and will be accompanied by E or SE wind. This deposits snow in different locations than you’re used to, and it also involves rare easterly orographic effects that this forecaster doesn’t see often. The snow level will be 2500′ this morning, 3000′ this afternoon, and 3500′ overnight. About 0.4” to 0.5” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today. That’s 4-5” average quality snow. Another 0.2” WE is forecast tonight for a couple inches more. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if we beat that forecast. Wind will be SE 15 this morning, SE 25-30 this afternoon, and light/variable tonight.

Wednesday will be mostly clear then partly cloudy. A few instability-driven flurries are possible but not promised in the afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 3500′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ after midnight. If any snow falls, it’ll be just a trace during the mid-afternoon period of heightened instability. Wind: light and variable all day building to WNW 25 overnight.

Thursday will be partly cloudy in the morning and high overcast in the afternoon and evening. The free air freezing level will be 3000′ to start the day, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ after midnight. Wind: WNW 25-30 in the morning, W 30 in the afternoon, and WSW 20-30 overnight. Light snowfall Friday morning (less than an inch during the day) gives way to heavy snowfall in the evening (5-8”) and sets up a storm skiing powder day on Saturday. Flurries continue Sunday. Have a great week!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Widespread easterlies continue today as a massive low pressure system hangs off the coast. Lighter wind Wednesday gives way to a chance of stronger westerlies Thursday, but models are far from certain about this. Tuesday starts with 30-35 at Rooster, 20-25 at Stevenson and 5-15 east of Viento. The wind holds through early afternoon from Rooster to Viento and picks up to 15-25 east of Viento. Afternoon wind drops to 15-20 at Rooster, 10-15 at Stevenson, and holds at 10-20 east of Viento. River flow range yesterday was 80-146kcfs, river temp is 43F, and high temp forecast is 48F.

Wednesday starts with 15-20 at Rooster and 10 at Stevenson and Viento. The wind turns light/variable in the afternoon through the whole Gorge. High temp: 56F. Thursday has the possibility of moderate to strong westerlies, but models don’t yet agree on how strong. If you believe the deterministic GFS, we’re looking at 27-31. Most other ensemble members have the wind in the low to mid 20’s. You’ll do best if you head east of The Dalles, and this gives you a chance to stop at the sister food carts of Amayah’s (Biggs) and Tadka (The Dalles, Coastal parking lot). High temp Thursday: 52F and partly to mostly sunny in the eastern Gorge.

Temps will be near 40 in the morning and in the mid 50’s later. Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Thursday will be partly sunny. Temps start in the mid 30’s and rise to the low 50’s. Cycling

Cows are going in soon on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. On to trails… There’s definitely some brown pow out there now, but you’ll need to be selective, especially after the rain falling on Tuesday. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
