Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today (Tuesday) is going to be quite the day on Mt. Hood. It’s unclear if you’ll even get a chance to shred before a massive storm shuts down the lifts, knocks down a few trees, and generally makes a mess of the slopes and the drive. That said, we should see a fair bit of snow out of this system, at least at the higher elevations. Additional snow is forecast this week with the exception of a brief period on Friday morning. Let’s dive in!

Tuesday kicks off with rain at 5000′ and snow at 6000′ or so. The snow level will continue to drop today. By The afternoon, it falls to 4000-4500′, and then falls further to 2000′ after midnight. Here’s the “fun” part – absolutely nuking wind from late morning on through the evening, enough for full-on blizzard conditions. We’ll see about 0.5” water equivalent (WE) before the switch to snow – half an inch of sloppy snain. In the afternoon, about 1.0” to 1.5” WE of dense snow falls, for perhaps a foot of new. Overnight: 1.1” WE of increasingly dry snow for 10-14” of new. But wait, there’s more! It will be so windy with this system, that 1) snow will be unequally distributed; 2) snow quality will be damage – windpack and sastrugi are likely; and 3) orographic effects could add to the totals overnight. Here’s the best part – wind. SW 40-70 this morning, WSW 60-80 midday, W 75 in the afternoon (adios, lifts; hello blizzard), and NW 45 overnight. If you are going to attempt the resorts today, bring a shovel and your winter emergency kit, just in case. At the very least, blowing and drifting snow will necessitate a shovel to escape the resort parking lots! Expect whiteout conditions on the roads at times.

Wednesday kicks off with blizzard conditions and wind-affected lifts. Resorts will also be digging out and cleaning up. Delayed openings are likely, as are snow-filled parking lots. The wind and snowfall intensity both fade as the day progresses. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast during the day. Let’s double that thanks to NW wind – 3-4” new snow. Overnight: just a trace of new. Wind: NW 45 (may affect lift ops) in the morning, W 35-40 in the afternoon, WSW 25-30 in the evening, and SW 10-15 overnight.

Thursday brings an additional round of heavy snow. Unfortunately, it switches to rain overnight, so get it while you can! The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning and 4500′ in the afternoon. After midnight, temps rise and the snow level climbs to 6500′. During the day, 1.0” WE is forecast. That’s 9-11” new. Overnight: 0.5” WE as mixed precip. Wind: SW 10-15 in the morning builds to WSW 30-40 in the afternoon and turns to SW 25-40 overnight.

Rain quickly switches to snow on Friday morning. Several inches are possible with strong west wind. After that: probably more snow as La Nina continues to hammer the PNW. Stay safe today. This storm is not one to mess with!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Monday brings forest bathing and meditation walk. Meet at 5:15pm Mondays in November at the corner of Arrowhead Ave and Indian Creek Road. Suggested donation up to $20. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Now it’s icy on the trails! We’ll keep the freeze/thaw language just in case the snow goes somewhere (which it won’t any time soon). If you ride trails that froze and then thawed, you’ll do major and probably permanent damage to the tread. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. Upper elevation trails, above 4000′, are likely to have some snow coverage. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
