Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There’s about 5” of snow at 5000′ right now, which (as predicted) was enough snow for a blizzard of media from the ski resorts. If you need pictures of snow, video of snow, and predictions of snow, just get on the Facebook and scan the resort pages. We’ll see continued snowfall during the day today. The snow level will be around 4500′ through the afternoon, rising to 5500′ or so this evening. We’ll see .2-.3” water value (WV) between 8am and 5pm, after which the snow will end. That should give us 2-3” of additional snowfall today. Wind will be W 20 all day long. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Wednesday starts out clear, turns cloudy in the afternoon, and sees rain after 8pm. Sorry. I know you wanted to hear about snow, not rain. Thursday’s snow level will be 5000′ in the morning and 10,000′ when the precipitation hits Mt. Hood. We’ll see, depending on the track of the system, .5” to 2.0” of rain between 8pm Thursday and 5am Friday. Sorry, sorry, sorry. Wind will be SW 10 in the morning, rising to SW 20-30 overnight.

Thursday starts off rain and ends up rainy with the rain ending around 11pm. Again, my apologies. I know you’d rather hear about snow than the R word. We’ll see 1-3” of rain during the day (depending on the storm track). Wind will be SW 30 all day long, turning more to the WSW after 5pm. Friday currently looks partly cloudy or sunny with no precipitation. The free air freezing level on Friday will be around 7000′.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Once again we are starting off the morning with light and variable wind. As a weather system moves through today and high pressure starts to build over the region, we’ll see the wind pick up a bit. Expect 16-19 east of Mosier after 10am with 13-16 from Steven’s Locks to Mosier. Wednesday starts off with light and variable wind and picks up to E 15-20 as an upper level low spins off the coast. Thursday starts off light and variable too. As a cold front moves in, the wind will pick up to 16-19 east of The Dalles. The rainy western Gorge will see gusty 10-13 on Thursday. Friday looks light and variable early with 13-16 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

Research has shown that our minds have a negativity bias. This means that we are more likely to notice things that feel bad or carry some form of threat. Sensitivity to negativity is a self-protective survival measure. It’s our mind’s way of interacting with the world in a “better safe than sorry” manner.

Unfortunately, this leads to all sorts of trouble. The more we focus on negative things, the more we strengthen neural networks that correspond with negative feelings. The stronger these networks become, the more likely they are to fire off in any given situation. And once they fire, they wire together with whatever other networks are in play, tinging more of our world with a negative lens.

So what can we do about this feedback loop? We can hold the intention to pay mindful attention to positive happenstance too. By spending 30 seconds basking in the good, we enhance those happy neural networks. So, the next time you feel fear in your heart because you’re worried about the legitimacy of the election, the massive influx of incoming depolorables, the threat of ISIS, or our society’s current bent toward racism and xenophobia, take a minute to bask in the opposite. Maybe some Canadians telling you how great you are, the Pointer Sisters on Soul Train, or Marshawn Lynch’s ridiculous Skittles interview.

Be good. Notice the good. Have an awesome day.

Light to moderate wind. 14% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks partly cloudy early, cloudy in the afternoon, and rainy in the evening. Road and Mountain Biking

Post is still in no shape for riding, and with more rain on the way through Thursday, it’ll stay in too-muddy-to-ride shape for a few more days. Try Syncline instead. Gunsight and possibly High Prairie are off the list right now due to 4-5” of snow at 5000′. In road biking news, Wednesday morning looks doable, with light wind and no rain.

Upcoming Events

Hi Tuesday. There’s free yoga at Flow tonight at 4:30. There’s Strong Women yoga at HAVEN in The Dalles at 5. There’s pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 5, and there’s meditation (sans monks tonight) at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30. There’s also $12 Prime Rib at Cebu from 5pm to 9pm.
