Gorge Wind Forecast

Today (Tuesday) is probably (maybe?) your last chance for westerlies until Saturday or Sunday, so get on it! We’ll have frontally-driven west wind today followed by maybe-enough thermals on Wednesday then east wind on Thursday and Friday. Models suggest the incoming heat wave will favor the desert over the west side starting on Saturday; that should turn the wind westerly again. Fingers crossed!

Pressures this morning were 30.08/30.00/29.96 for gradients of 0.08 and 0.04. That’s pretty similar to yesterday and so is the overall weather setup. We have another weak system approaching, and that will make the wind gusty and tricky to predict. Let’s go with 14-17 to start the day from Viento to Hood River or maybe Mosier. Midday wind drops off in the west as this system nears – We’ll find 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River, 20-23 from Mosier to The Dalles, and 11-14 east of The Dalles. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 22-25 from Mosier to Rufus with 11-14 west of Mosier and gusty 20-23 near Arlington, maybe. River flow yesterday was 59-92kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp today is 76F.

Ridging builds on Wednesday, and we lose some of the west side onshore flow. This means we’re counting on desert warming to drive thermals. It’s going to be close, oh-so-close. The day starts with 11-14 from Viento to Swell. Temps equalize across the region midday; if/when this happens, the wind will dip. If/when the desert gets a little edge on heating, we could see afternoon thermals at 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River. Locations to the east will be calm enough to say they’re calm. High: 79F.

The heat low settles in on the west side Thursday and Friday and sets up a round of easterlies. Call it 15ish or a touch more from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Viento on Thursday and 20-25 Friday. Models currently call for a switch back to westerlies on Saturday (17-20) and Sunday (23-26), but there’s significant uncertainty about Sunday. Major uncertainty persists for Monday and Tuesday, but there’s a cooldown in there somewhere! Fingers crossed it’s the cooldown we’re looking for. Have a lovely day!

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
